Qualcomm recently announced to release its new Snapdragon 780G processor. The new 5G Mobile Platform is an extension to Qualcomm’s 7-series SoCs.
What is the architecture of the new Snapdragon 780G 5G Mobile Platform? When will it arrive?
The new processor from Qualcomm is designed on 5nm process technology. It is the first SoC to house a triple image signal processor (ISP) for high-quality video capturing including 4K and HDR10. To date, more than 350 devices have been installed with the Snapdragon 7-series processors. We can expect the processor to be installed in devices by the second quarter of 2021.
What are the features of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 780G 5G Mobile Platform?
The new Snapdragon 780G processor will unlock new capabilities in terms of 5G connectivity and gaming performance. Here are the key features of the new 5G Mobile Platform
Boosted Gaming Performance
The Snapdragon 780G will sport an Adreno 642 GPU for ultra-fast video processing. The Hexagon 770 processor accompanied by the sixth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine can perform AI operations up to 12 Tera operations per second (TOPs). Moreover, the second-generation Qualcomm Sensing Hub paired with a dedicated AI processor efficiently handles the audio processing task.
Enhanced Processing Speeds
The Snapdragon 780G comes with more power as compared to the current Snapdragon 765G and Snapdragon 750G processors. The Kryo 670 CPU will enhance the performance of the new chipset by up to a 40 per cent performance increase over its predecessors.
The high-Quality camera and video performances
The Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming integration offers an immersive video quality with up to 144Hz screen refresh rate. The Qualcomm Spectra 570 ISP fully supports a triple rear camera setup. It enables photo-capturing up to 192MP and HDR video-recording at 4K resolution.
Ultra-fast download speeds
The Snapdragon X53 5G Modem-RF System installed in the new processor is capable of providing download speeds as high as 3.3Gbps on sub-6 GHz frequencies. The FastConnect 6900 System provides compatibility with the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology.
Memory Suppor and Lightning-fast charging
The new Snapdragon 780G fully supports the LPDDR4 memory reaching a clock speed of up to 2.1GHz. The Quick Charge 4 technology enables lightning-fast charging.
According to Kedar Kondap, Vice President, Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, “Since introducing the Snapdragon 7-series three years ago, more than 350 devices have launched based on 7-series mobile platforms. Today, we are continuing this momentum by introducing the Snapdragon 780G 5G Mobile Platform. Snapdragon 780G was designed to bring in-demand, premium experiences to more users around the world”.
