Qualcomm late last night on Wednesday introduced a new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 at the annual Snapdragon Tech Summit. This is the company’s latest mobile platform for the upcoming flagship Android smartphones. The new SoC features Wi-Fi 6 & 6E with multi-gig speeds — even with multiple devices on one network.
While announcing the new flagship chipset Qualcomm said, “The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Mobile Platform is our most advanced 5G platform ever, with our Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System ushering in unprecedented speeds up to 10 Gbps while supporting all-day power and more locations than ever. Plus, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 features leading Wi-Fi 6 & 6E with multi-gig speeds — even with multiple devices on one network.”

In terms of specifications, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is powered by the 7th Gen Qualcomm AI Engine. This enables intelligent use cases in gaming, wellness, photography, and productivity. It is said to provide up to 4x faster performance and 2x larger shared memory plus a 2x faster tensor accelerator— best performance-per-watt in Snapdragon history.
The Always-on 3rd Gen Qualcomm Sensing Hub, featuring a new Low Power AI System and the world’s first always-on ISP. Plus, a Snapdragon Sight 18-bit ISP captures incredible colour and clarity in photos and 8K HDR videos.
In addition to this, the latest chipset comes integrated with the world’s first 10-Gigabit 5G Modem-RF solution. The Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System supports more 5G networks worldwide, all-new 5G bands, global multi-SIM, and support for all-day battery. Download content in seconds, stream without interruption, gain an advantage in your favourite mobile game, and use GPS in more places than ever before.
Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 Mobile Connectivity System offers the most advanced Wi-Fi 6 and 6E system with leading speeds up to 3.6 Gbps. This also supports Snapdragon Sound with Qualcomm aptX Lossless Technology for CD-quality lossless wireless audio. Also, it is the first to support LE Audio innovations such as broadcast audio, stereo recording for content creators, and voice back-channels for gaming.
As far as the graphics are concerned, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 comes with a full suite of Snapdragon Elite Gaming Features. In addition to this, the Adreno GPU is claimed to deliver 30% faster graphics rendering and increases power efficiency by 25%. Plus, the Adreno Frame Motion Engine efficiently raises FPS for smooth, stunning action that lasts. It is the first to come with Audiokinetic technology to produce immersive, console-quality sound.
The new Snapdragon platform has the Qualcomm Spectra Image Signal Processor supporting Triple 18-bit ISPs, up to 3.2 Gigapixels per Second computer vision ISP (CV-ISP). It can provide up to 36 MP triple camera at 30 FPS with Zero Shutter Lag and up to 64+36 MP dual camera at 30 FPS with Zero Shutter Lag. It can also provide support for up to 200 Megapixel Photo Capture.
For the display, the new chipset will have support for QHD+ at 144 Hz. There will be maximum external display support of up to 4K at 60 Hz with 10-bit color depth, Rec. 2020 colour gamut along with HDR10 and HDR10+.
The Snapdragon flagship chipset will support LP-DDR5 memory up to 3200 MHz and up to 16GB of memory density. In addition to this, the company has also provided Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 Technology for fast charging.
In terms of security, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will include wireless edge services (WES) and premium security features, 3D Sonic Sensor and Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max (fingerprint sensor) and Type-1 Hypervisor.

Speaking about the availability, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will be shipped to the upcoming flagship smartphones. To name a few, brands like OnePlus, Xiaomi, Vivo, Black Shark, Redmi, ZTE, iQoo and others will be using the new mobile platform on their next-gen flagship devices starting late 2021.
