If you thought the Spider-Man games were Insomniac’s most intense work yet, Marvel’s Wolverine PS5 release date is officially set for September 15, 2026, and the extended gameplay reveal at PlayStation‘s State of Play on June 2 suggests the studio is done playing nice. Logan is back, he is sharper than ever, and this time around there is absolutely no shortage of crimson.
Insomniac’s Most Violent Game Yet
The State of Play presentation was the most extensive look at the game to date, and it wasted no time establishing tone. The footage highlighted a noticeably more violent approach than anything in Insomniac’s Marvel catalogue so far, with enemies being slashed, impaled, and hurled through environmental hazards throughout. The core combat loop revolves around aggressive combo chains and counter mechanics that allow players to seamlessly slice through hostile forces. This is emphatically not Miles Morales swinging between skyscrapers with a smile.
Marvel’s Wolverine is a standalone entry in Insomniac’s Marvel universe, sharing continuity with the Spider-Man games while telling a fully self-contained original story. The creative team behind it is no small thing. Brian Horton and Cameron Christian serve as creative and game directors, respectively, with writer Mary Kenney teaming up with Spec Ops: The Line scribe Walt Williams. That last credit alone tells you a great deal about where the storytelling ambitions lie.

The setup is pure X-Men gold. Logan is tailing a group of mutants who have been hunted and captured by the Reavers, a cybernetic guns-for-hire militia. Their employer is Bolivar Trask, a billionaire industrialist described as being driven by a fanatical belief in human superiority. Sound familiar? Classic X-Men territory, executed with modern grit. Jean Grey steps in as a powerful telekinetic ally, and Logan rejoins Team X, a last-stand mutant task force he had walked away from three years prior. Mutants live in the shadows here. Society has no idea they exist. The only ones who can protect them are themselves.
Combat Deep Dive: Rage, Techniques, and Last Stand
The combat system is where things get genuinely exciting. Logan can stalk enemies with stealth, ambush from above, or simply charge in claws-first. Special combat moves called Techniques include the Tornado Spin and Bull Rush, adding deliberate flair to the savagery. Teaming up with Jean Grey opens doors for Critical Strikes, devastating finishing moves that Wolverine can execute solo or alongside allies.
Every hit, parry, and kill builds Logan’s Rage meter. At maximum Rage Tier 3, Wolverine enters a stylized black-and-white combat state inspired by Marvel’s Black, White, and Blood comic series. It is a genuinely clever homage that also makes for a visually striking moment on screen. On the other end of the spectrum, the Last Stand mechanic activates Logan’s Healing Factor at the brink of defeat, giving players one brutal final chance to turn the tide.
One of the set pieces shown involves Wolverine tearing across a highway on a motorcycle, slashing tires, hurling enemies off vehicles, and taking on powerful Brute-class enemies mid-chase. Cinematic but grounded. Very much the energy this character demands.
Characters Confirmed: A Proper X-Men Roster
Insomniac is pulling from deep X-Men lore. Sabretooth, Wolverine’s most personal and persistent antagonist, gets a clear shot in the trailer’s closing moments. Silver Samurai and Omega Red also appear, suggesting the game is reaching well beyond the obvious villain picks. Mystique has been confirmed as part of the roster too, rounding out what is shaping up to be one of the more faithful X-Men ensembles in any game in recent memory. Previous teases have also pointed to locations including the Canadian wilderness, Tokyo, and Madripoor, promising a globe-trotting scope worthy of a full blockbuster.

Pre-orders are live now. The standard edition is priced at $69.99 USD / £69.99 / €79.99 and comes with the Classic Brown Suit early unlock, Reflective Claws, one Technique Point, and four PS Avatars. The Digital Deluxe Edition at $79.99 USD / £79.99 / €89.99 adds five exclusive suits (Incredible, Savage, Age of Apocalypse, Night Hunt, and New Leather), five exclusive claw sets, and three additional Technique Points. All suits and claws in the Digital Deluxe Edition are purely cosmetic.
On accessibility, Insomniac confirmed the game will launch with a comprehensive set of options, including a gore toggle for players who want the Wolverine experience without all the blood. Support for cognitive, visual, auditory, and motor disabilities is also confirmed, continuing Insomniac’s strong track record in this area.

Sony has confirmed that narrative single-player first-party games will no longer come to PC, and Marvel’s Wolverine is explicitly included with no PC version planned, ever. If you want to play this one, a PlayStation 5 is your only ticket. For the tens of millions of PS5 owners who have been waiting since the original announcement back in September 2021, September 15 cannot come quickly enough.
After years of teasing and one very long wait, Marvel’s Wolverine is shaping up to be the definitive Logan experience in gaming. Insomniac has earned enormous trust with its Spider-Man catalogue, but this feels like the studio stepping into genuinely new territory, darker, meaner, and far more personal. September 15 is circled on a lot of calendars right now, and honestly, that is exactly where it belongs.
