Air India has integrated Apple AirTag’s location feature into its baggage tracking system and mobile app, making it Asia’s first airline to provide this service to its passengers. This enables customers with Apple devices to safely track the whereabouts of their luggage.
Air India is integrating AirTag into its mobile app and website to help find and speed the recovery of over 100 million bags each year. The integration expands on the easy-to-use baggage tracking feature, which uses real-time data from airports to keep customers updated. Baggage information is instantly available after check-in for customers who have added their flight to the app’s “My Trips” section or the website’s “Track My Bags” tab. Customers can also use the barcode on their baggage receipts to start tracking.
How does Air India’s baggage location feature use Apple’s AirTag and Share Item Location feature?
AirTag is a service that allows passengers to report misplaced luggage at the airport to Air India‘s Baggage Counter. The airport staff will assist in submitting a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) for the baggage. The passenger must create a ‘Share Item Location’ in the ‘Find My’ app on their Apple device and send the location link to Air India. This can be done using the Air India mobile app or the website.

The guest can access the ‘Customer Support Portal’ via the app and select ‘Lost and Found Check-in Baggage’, which will provide the AirTag link. The shared AirTag link is then used by Air India’s authorised airport staff to find and reunite the luggage with the passenger. Location sharing will terminate automatically when a guest gets back their bag or after seven days. The guest can stop it at any time.
Note that the guest must be using Apple devices running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 or later to experience the new Share Item Location feature.
