Vivo Y400 Pro 5G Review: A decent mid-ranger

Should you purchase this mid-range smartphone?

The Vivo Y400 Pro 5G was recently launched in India at a price of under Rs 27,000. The gadget appears nice on paper, given the features it offers. It’s the successor to last year’s Vivo Y300 Plus. We used it for a few days to figure out both its positive and negative aspects. So, let’s get started. This is our review of the Vivo Y400 Pro 5G smartphone.

Vivo Y400 Pro 5G Review: Design and Display

We have the Fest Gold edition of the smartphone with us. It features a matte surface on the rear that resembles metal. Fingerprints are difficult to see on the plastic rear panel because of its matte finish. The smartphone’s back panel and frame are constructed of polycarbonate, which isn’t always a negative thing, but the gadget has a very premium appearance. Its silky surface feels great in the hand.

We think the camera module is quite visually appealing. A sizable camera module with a new kind of notification light at the bottom is included here.

When you turn it over, the selfie camera is housed in a 3D curved display with a punch-hole notch. The phone feels good in the hand and is easier to hold because of its curved shape. The speaker grill, Type-C port, SIM tray, microphone, and secondary microphone are located on the top and bottom, while the power and volume rocker keys are on the right. The gadget has an IP65 classification, which indicates that it is resistant to dust and splashes. Therefore, it is not a problem to use it in light rain. Additionally, a rear cover, which is different from the typical TPU case that comes with other smartphones, is included in the box.

The 6.77-inch full-HD+ 3D curved AMOLED display of the Vivo Y400 Pro 5G has a touch sampling rate of up to 300 Hz. The refresh rate of the display is 120 Hz. With a maximum brightness of 4,500 nits, it is compatible with YouTube and Netflix’s 4K HDR. Thin bezels frame it, but the chin is much larger than the rest. Additionally, the phone boasts an optical in-display fingerprint sensor that unlocks the handset swiftly despite its low placement.

Regardless of the viewing angle, the colours that were shown on the screen were accurate and vivid. The sunlight readability might be improved, but the text and photos were crisp and clear. Overall, using the smartphone to play games and watch movies was enjoyable.

The stereo speakers can be quite loud and provide excellent music quality. Additionally, a volume boost option is included, which allows the volume to be increased by up to 300 percent.

Vivo Y400 Pro 5G Review: Performance and Camera

Now let’s talk about the smartphone’s performance. A MediaTek Dimensity 7300 SoC with up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage and 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM is located underneath.

Given that a phone with comparable hardware can be purchased for between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000, the hardware setup is somewhat subpar. Based on the results of our benchmark test, we can categorically state that this is not a performance-focused smartphone priced around Rs 30,000.

However, the device performed well on the majority of the tasks we gave it. The phone was capable of handling multitasking, including using navigation while looking through Instagram and viewing YouTube videos.

The handset comes pre-installed with FuntouchOS 15 and Android 15. While the bespoke software allows for certain unique features on the device, it also includes a significant amount of junk, and not all of the pre-installed apps can be deleted. Nonetheless, it has customising capabilities such as animation controls and storage compression.

Since we’re talking about software, let’s discuss updates. The firm promises to provide two years of operating system upgrades and three years of security fixes, which we believe is 1 year less. Looking at the rivals, the corporation should deliver at least 3+4 years of upgrades, which is possible at this price point.

When it comes to gaming, the Vivo Y400 Pro 5G is not marketed as a gaming device, although it is capable of running games like BGMI. Ninety frames per second is not supported here. Except for the odd slowness, we had no issues when playing at 60 frames per second. But after extended gaming sessions, you won’t even realise it. You will notice a little bit of heat, though.

With a touch sampling rate of 300 Hz, this makes gaming and even regular touchscreen interactions fluid and responsive.

Multitasking on this phone is optimised, and the whole experience is seamless.

We have discussed performance, display, and design. Now, let’s address the cameras.

Review of Vivo Y400 Pro 5G

The Vivo Y400 Pro 5G has a dual rear camera configuration that includes a 50-megapixel Sony IMX882 main sensor with an f/1.79 aperture and a 2-megapixel sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. The front camera has a 32-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f/2.45. The phone’s cameras enable Sony’s multifocal portrait and 4K video recording capabilities on both the front and back cameras.

Review of Vivo Y400 Pro 5G

You could assume from the camera samples that the Vivo Y400 Pro 5G’s main sensor captures high-quality images. During the day, images captured with the main camera showed a fair amount of detail and brilliant colours. When it comes to photographs, we believe Vivo’s photo processing handles this rather effectively. The photographs also have excellent HDR processing. The gadget did a good job of presenting the colours and subject detection.

Review of Vivo Y400 Pro 5G

Neither an ultra-wide sensor nor a telephoto lens is included here. What is the function of the 2-megapixel sensor, exactly? We are unsure. However, we believe it to be a bokeh sensor. In portrait mode, colour details, background blur, and edge detection are all displayed with accuracy.

Review of Vivo Y400 Pro 5G

Selfies taken with the Vivo Y400 Pro 5G show accurate face colours and a respectable level of detail. At the same time, selfies include perfect edge detection and background blur effects. Low-light selfies are also wonderful.

When it comes to video recording, you may record in front and rear at up to 4K at 30 frames per second.

Because the Vivo Y400 Pro 5G lets in more light, it produces a decent dynamic range at the cost of a bit less contrast, which is another reason why we liked the camera’s typical nighttime photos.

Now, let’s discuss its battery. The 5,500 mAh battery that comes with this phone is, in our opinion, a respectable size given its overall thickness. If you use it for gaming, watching videos, and taking pictures, the battery will last you a day. The phone comes with a 90W charger, which has an excellent charging speed. It charges the phone rather quickly. When we had the phone with us, the in-display fingerprint scanner was always functioning properly.

Verdict

The Vivo Y400 Pro 5G is a mid-range smartphone that is affordable to those with less spending power for flagship devices. Considering the fact that it is made of plastic, we enjoyed the design since it is lighter and thinner, and it feels excellent in the hand. The phone does not meet all of your needs, but if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks and you will be satisfied. The battery-and-charger combination is also impressive.

To summarise, if you’re searching for a nice mid-range smartphone, this one is definitely worth considering.
