Meta is planning to lay off 600 employees from its artificial intelligence subsidiary, TBD Labs, as part of a goal to remove layers and operate more efficiently. The layoffs did not affect TBD Labs personnel, which included numerous top-tier AI hires. The move is viewed as an attempt to strengthen Wang’s role in the company’s AI strategy. The reductions are part of Meta’s efforts to simplify operations and shrink its bloated AI section.
Meta is cutting several hundred positions from its AI infrastructure and Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research unit, while hiring for its newer TBD Lab, since it feels its ongoing AI efforts have grown too bureaucratic. The reductions were disclosed in a message by CEO Alexandr Wang, who was appointed as part of Meta‘s $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI. The layoffs did not, however, affect staff at TBD Labs, which is led by Wang and employs numerous top-tier AI personnel.
The organisation intends to make its operations more agile by lowering team size, reducing the number of conversations necessary for deciding, and boosting each person’s shouldering capability. This step is supposed to improve the decision-making process.

Meta is eliminating 600 roles from its superintelligence lab, impacting FAIR AI research, product-related AI, and AI infrastructure units while excluding the recently established TBD Lab unit. The business encourages impacted workers to apply for other roles inside Meta, with the expectation that the majority will find internal opportunities. Meta is continuing aggressively recruiting and hiring for its TBD Lab branch, with recent additions including OpenAI research scientist Ananya Kumar and co-founder Andrew Tulloch of Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines.

Following layoffs, Meta’s Superintelligence Labs now employs little under 3,000 people. Some employees have been advised that their termination date is November 21, and they are under a non-working notice period. Meta will pay 16 weeks of severance + two weeks for each completed year of employment, less the notice period. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has voiced dissatisfaction with Meta’s AI development.
The layoffs are intended to downsize the department and improve Wang’s position in the company’s AI strategy. Meta has been revising its AI strategy to stay up with competitors like OpenAI and Google, investing billions in infrastructure initiatives and recruitment.
