WhatsApp is currently testing a new Android feature that allows users to give personalised tags to group members, making it easier to identify them within groups. This feature, which is presently available to select beta testers in the most recent beta release, allows the setting up of personalised tags up to 30 characters long for easier identification.
According to the WABetaInfo report, the most recent upgrade includes a personalised labelling option for beta testers, which allows users to define their involvement within a group using customised tags. This feature allows for a better understanding of each member’s duty and can include a number of descriptions, such as professional titles like “Project Manager” or “Event Coordinator”, as well as positions in community or sports organisations, as demonstrated by tags such as “Coach”. Larger groups can benefit from users choosing names that represent their organisational duties, such as “Moderator”.

Users have total control over their tags, allowing them to select options that best reflect their expertise, hobbies, or authoritative responsibilities without the requirement for administrator permission. This self-identification facilitates group communication by offering rapid clarity on who to approach about certain issues. The feature improves group dynamics by encouraging transparency and clarity among members, resulting in better engagement and collaboration.

When a new WhatsApp group is formed, members must give a descriptive tag indicating their position to ensure simple identification from the start. Existing members may add or change their tags from the chat info screen, and they can pick a tag that is up to 30 characters long and does not contain special characters, checkmarks, or links. These tags are accessible to all members, providing clarity about each person’s role and duties; hence, they improve group dynamics for both new and returning members. This feature encourages clarity and effective communication by explicitly defining responsibilities such as moderating or project coordination, making it easy for all group members to understand who is engaged in particular discussions.
Every group member has the option to update their member tag at any time, providing complete control over their identity. If the original tag has a typo or error, it may be quickly fixed using the chat information section. Furthermore, any changes in responsibilities or new positions within the group may be updated appropriately. This flexibility ensures that the member tag accurately represents the individual’s current position and contributions to the organisation.
