Hypertension Notifications enabled for Apple Watch users in India

The feature uses an optical heart sensor to track how blood vessels respond to heartbeats.

Apple has expanded its Hypertension Notifications feature for the Apple Watch to India, making it accessible on Series 9, Ultra 2, and later versions with watchOS 26. This tool notifies users if consistent signs of chronic blood pressure are found after analysing heart data for 30 days. It is not intended for anyone under 22, those with hypertension, or pregnant women. The Apple Watch does not offer alerts for heart attacks.

Beginning today, Apple Watch introduces a new hypertension notification function in India, aimed at informing users when signs of chronic high blood pressure are detected. Hypertension is a key modifiable risk factor for serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, and renal disease, affecting an estimated 1.3 billion individuals globally. Hypertension usually goes misdiagnosed since it is generally asymptomatic; many people do not see a doctor on a regular basis, and a single blood pressure reading during a clinical visit can easily miss the illness.

Hypertension notifications on the Apple Watch use data from the optical heart sensor to track how blood vessels respond to heartbeats. This program runs in the background for 30 days, alerting users to consistent hypertension indications. Such notifications provide valuable insights into the health of this common condition, allowing users to make potentially life-saving behavioural changes or begin treatment to reduce the risk of serious long-term health consequences.

Apple’s hypertension notifications are scientifically validated and created using powerful machine learning, relying on significant training data from over 100,000 individuals. The feature’s effectiveness was proven in a clinical investigation with over 2,000 individuals. Although it will not identify every occurrence of hypertension, the Apple Watch is expected to notify more than 1 million people with undiagnosed hypertension in its first year of use.

Apple suggests that if the users receive a hypertension notification, they track their blood pressure for seven days with a third-party cuff and share the results with their physician, in accordance with the most recent American Heart Association guidelines.

Professor Dorairaj Prabhakaran, the Centre for Chronic Disease Control’s executive director and the World Heart Federation’s president-elect said, “Hypertension is one of the most widespread yet under-diagnosed health conditions. Integrating opportunistic detection into a device people already wear daily will democratise access for early detection and help people have more informed conversations with their doctors.”
