YouTube Premium Lite now includes two important features: background playback and offline downloads. These upgrades, which were in great demand, are intended to expand the appeal of the lower-cost membership tier in India and globally. While YouTube Music Premium is still only available to people with full YouTube Premium memberships, these new options cater to those looking for a better experience with fewer ads and more playback freedom without the cost of a full subscription.
YouTube Premium Lite consumers in India have received substantial changes to improve their watching experience. Notably, these subscribers may now play videos in the background, which is a convenient option for those who want to listen to content while doing other things.
The company, via blog post, said, “You asked, and we listened! Background Play and Downloads are coming to YouTube’s Premium Lite subscription service. We have started rolling these out, and in the coming weeks, all Premium Lite subscribers in India will be able to watch most videos ad-free, offline and in the background.”

Furthermore, the inclusion of offline downloading enables members to download videos via Wi-Fi or mobile networks. This function allows users to save content for later viewing, making it convenient for individuals who travel or visit places with inconsistent internet access. These changes seek to increase user access and enjoyment of YouTube’s products.
The service offered does not include all of the capabilities provided in the standard YouTube Premium package. Notably, full Premium subscribers get special features such as ad-free music streaming, which is inaccessible to those using the less expensive subscription. Furthermore, the audio-only listening functionality is exclusive to YouTube Music Premium, showing a disparity in features between full and partial subscription plans.

Previously, Premium Lite offered an ad-free experience with no background playback or download capabilities. The YouTube Premium Lite membership in India costs Rs 89 per month.
These new features will be rolled out in the next few weeks.
