Amazon’s next smartphone with Alexa is in the works: Report

The device may include artificial intelligence capabilities, utilising Alexa prominently.

Amazon is developing a new smartphone that is designed to work flawlessly with its voice assistant, Alexa. This effort follows the company’s earlier attempt at a smartphone, the Fire Phone, which debuted in June 2014 but was withdrawn within a year owing to poor performance. The new smartphone is intended to improve user connectivity to Amazon’s vast ecosystem of goods and services. A specialised team called ZeroOne, operating within Amazon’s devices and services section, is working on this project. In terms of aesthetics, the next smartphone’s design is inspired by the Light Phone’s basic features, implying a focus on functionality that is simple and easy to use.

According to reports, Amazon’s devices and services business is working on a new smartphone called “Transformer”. The main purpose of this phone is to be a mobile personalisation device that works well with the Alexa voice assistant. The initiative fits with Jeff Bezos’ idea of creating a voice-controlled computer assistant, which is like the advanced technology shown in “Star Trek”.

The smartphone’s design emphasises the shopping experience, presenting it as a direct rival to Apple’s products. Amazon strives to improve consumer convenience by offering delivery benefits and savings with Prime membership. Additionally, the business intends to utilise this mobile platform to collect valuable customer data related to purchase histories and content preferences, allowing for a more personalised shopping experience.

We don’t know anything about the “Transformer” project’s estimated costs, revenue goals, or financial commitments at this time. Furthermore, the schedule for the project is still unclear, and it might be cancelled if strategic priorities or budgetary problems arise.

According to Reuters, an Amazon spokeswoman has not commented on this news. After this uncertainty, Amazon’s stock fell 1.6%, bringing the price down to $205.37. This decline was part of a larger drop of 9.3% over the year. The phone that goes with this initiative is meant to improve personalisation features to make shopping and services better for users. These include Prime Video, Prime Music, and meal ordering capabilities that work with partners like Grubhub.

The goal of the Transformer project is to change how AI is introduced to new devices, which might make traditional app stores irrelevant. Alexa is a big part of this project, but it won’t be the main operating system for the gadget. The development comes after numerous prior attempts to make AI-embedded hardware, such as the Humane AI pin and the Rabbit R1 assistant, which ran into big problems, including failures and bad reviews, which caused some projects to be cancelled.
