What Is NYT Strands?
For anyone who has not yet fallen into this particular daily rabbit hole, Strands is a word puzzle from the New York Times that sits alongside Wordle, Connections, and the Mini Crossword in the growing NYT Games family. The goal is to find all the hidden theme words tucked inside a grid of letters, plus one special word called the Spangram.
The Spangram is the crown jewel of each puzzle. It describes the overarching theme and must physically touch two opposite sides of the board. Find it, and the whole puzzle starts to make sense. Miss it, and you are wandering through a garden maze without a map.

How to Play NYT Strands
The rules are simple, but the puzzles are sneaky. Here is how it works. You drag or tap letters to spell out words. Theme words stay highlighted in blue once found. Every three non-theme words you find earns you a hint, which reveals the letters of a theme word. The Spangram lights up in yellow when you crack it. No theme words overlap, and they fill the entire board by the end.
Today’s Strands Theme: “By Any Other Name…”
That Shakespeare reference is your biggest clue. Today’s theme hint is “How does your garden grow?” which, combined with the literary nod from the puzzle title, points very clearly in one direction. Think of the famous line from Romeo and Juliet: a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. The board today is full of roses, just not always labelled as such.

A Quick Word on Today’s Theme
Types of roses make for a surprisingly elegant Strands theme. Wild roses, damask roses, briar roses from fairy tales, the hedge roses that line country lanes, the yellow and white varieties that fill florists’ shelves in June. The puzzle is essentially a botany lesson wrapped in a word game, and that is a very pleasant way to start a Wednesday.
Today’s puzzle rewards anyone who knows their roses, their Shakespeare, or both. If you cracked it without hints, you deserve to stop and smell the flowers.
