Design and Comfort
The large oval earcups that define recent Sennheiser over-ears are back, but this one looks better than its predecessor. The fabric-wrapped headband, especially on the Denim finish, is more premium and less clinical.
Up close, the earcups are the weak spot. They are mostly matte plastic and feel a notch below the price tag. They swivel flat but do not fold inward, so the case is a bit bulkier than the competition. At 290g, the Momentum 5 is heavier than the 254g Sony XM6, though still lighter than the AirPods Max. Clamping force is well judged and comfort holds up over long sessions, with some ear warmth after the first hour.
Touch controls remain a Sennheiser strength. The big cup surfaces make volume and track swipes easy-to-land, and they respond quickly.
Software and Connectivity
Everything runs through the Sennheiser Smart Control Plus app, which is stable and easy to navigate. You get an eight-band custom EQ, adjustable noise-cancellation levels and a Dolby Atmos toggle with head tracking.
The headphones run Bluetooth 5.4, with Bluetooth 6.0 and LE Audio promised via a firmware update. Codec support covers SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless through Snapdragon Sound. Multipoint lets you pair a phone and laptop together. There is no LDAC, which stings if you are on a non-Snapdragon Android phone chasing high-res wireless audio. Wired listening works over 3.5mm or USB-C, and the latter handles up to 24-bit/96kHz.
Performance
Sound. The 42mm drivers are inspired by Sennheiser’s HD 600 series and built in Tullamore, Ireland. The transducer carries over from the Momentum 4, with revised tuning. The sound leans rich and warm. Bass is fuller than before, and some listeners will find it heavy out of the box, though the EQ fixes that in seconds. The midrange is the star, with vocals that sound natural and textured enough to embarrass pricier rivals.
Noise cancellation. Sennheiser doubled the microphone count to eight, four per earcup, and claims three times better midrange cancellation than the Momentum 4. The gain is real, especially with human voices, which helps in open offices and metro coaches. Still, it softens noise rather than erasing it.
Call quality. This is where the Momentum 5 quietly beats the competition. Wind and traffic are suppressed well, and voices come through clear and natural. For anyone who lives on calls, it is among the best in its class.
Momentum 5 battery life. Sennheiser claims up to 55 hours with ANC on. That is a few hours less than the Momentum 4 but still close to double what the Sony and other flagships offer. Fast charging is supported. Then there is the swappable cell. Sennheiser still officially supports its original 2018 Momentum True Wireless earbuds, so the track record is encouraging. The catch is that the company has not yet said what a replacement battery will cost in India, or how easy it will be to buy one in 2028.
Momentum 5 vs Sony XM6 and Other Rivals
This is the matchup that matters. The Sony WH-1000XM6 launched at the same Rs 39,990, as we noted in our India launch report. Street prices for it now run lower. Sony gives you slightly better ANC and a lighter body. Sennheiser counters with better calls, nearly double the battery life and a design meant to be repaired. Oh, and did we mention it has great sound?
Apple’s AirPods Max 2 ask for Rs 67,900, which is nearly Rs 28,000 more than the Momentum 5. Unless you are deep in Apple’s ecosystem, that gap is hard to justify.
Price and Availability in India
The Momentum 5 price in India is Rs 39,990, in Black and Denim. Pre-orders opened on September 24 through Sennheiser’s website, major online platforms and offline retail. Open sales begin on October 1.
Pre-order buyers get a BTD 600 Bluetooth USB dongle worth Rs 5,990. That is a decent sweetener, given that Sennheiser’s newer BTD 700 dongle costs Rs 4,990 on its own. Verdict
The Momentum 5 Wireless is the best over-ear headphone Sennheiser has made in this line. It sounds rich and refined, takes excellent calls, runs for days on a charge and is designed to be repaired rather than replaced. Its flaws are real but modest.
The bigger issue is Indian pricing. Abroad, this is the value pick. Here, it faces a Sony that costs less on the street. If you want the best ANC headphones in India, the Sony still makes more sense. But among headphones under Rs 40,000, the Momentum 5 is the thoughtful buy for anyone who values sound, calls and a pair that will outlast its warranty. As for replaceable-battery headphones go, it is a rare and welcome idea, and it could still be working in 2031.
