Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Review: Foldable with AI Features? What a fantastic combo!

This year, the Samsung Flip Phone saw some significant improvements. For those who would like to go from a standard Android or iOS device to a foldable phone, this clamshell phone is an excellent choice.

Samsung recently introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 in India and around the world. We had the opportunity to test both foldables and in this post, we will focus on the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Despite appearing identical to their predecessors, the new foldables have seen significant improvements. This review covers all aspects of the clamshell phone, including the AI features that Samsung has added to the latest edition of foldable phones.

The packaging is small, and inside it, you get the following:

  • Galaxy Z Flip 6
  • USB Type C to Type C cable
  • SIM card tool
  • Documentation

The form factor is outstanding. Its design is a sandwich of glass and metal. The flat sides of this pocket-sized phone have turned matte, and it has become more boxy. The rear cameras are now accentuated so they stick out. This camera module is elevated, as opposed to other locations, but the device remains stable when placed on a flat surface. We feel that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6  appears better and feels better because it seems more refined. You can hold your phone in one hand. It feels good to grasp because it is compact and not weighty.

There’s no noticeable gap anywhere close to the hinge, either. Since the phone’s two sides fold flat against one another, dust particles are prevented from entering the device.

The phone is water-resistant against water splashes thanks to its IP48 certification. That said, this implies that you cannot use it for water sports, in a swimming pool, or in a tub; otherwise, it would require servicing.

Even though the smartphone is sleek and robust, we nonetheless recommend using a cover because, over time, it may develop scratches or even shatter from an inadvertent hard fall.

During our experience with the Flip 6, we took a closer look at the screen and observed that the crease is almost unnoticeable. The clamshell phone’s sleek appearance and effortless folding are made possible by a novel hinge mechanism. It requires yanking to open with one hand. You should have no trouble doing it once you become used to it. This hinge was surprisingly light to use and quite responsive. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5’s hinge (Review), it is neither too tight nor too loose.

Because the hinge cover and case of the Galaxy Z Flip are composed of enhanced armour aluminium, they are more resilient to dents and scratches.

The bezels are extremely thin on all four sides, and they are hardly noticeable along with the crease. Additionally, because these bezels are very flat, swiping in or out at the display’s edges is a really pleasant experience. Fingerprints are difficult to collect on the inside folding display. If you do manage to smudge the display, it won’t take much work to remove it.

When the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is folded, the back cover serves as both the front and back sides. It includes Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 from Corning.

When folded, the prominent line along the side of the gadgets not only emphasises its sleek, linear appearance but also makes opening easier, improving overall usage.
Z Flip 6 creates an interesting vibe with both vibrant and subtle colours. We’re reviewing the Silver Shadow colour version, but you may also choose from pink, navy blue, mint, and yellow.

The device can be used both completely folded and unfolded or unfolded at angles ranging from 75 to 115 degrees. FlexMode allows users to set up their phones at any angle to watch movies or snap photos, eliminating the need for a phone holder or a tripod.
The horizontal camera setups are more apparent than in prior versions, making the new Flip phone easy to spot. We liked the design of the dual-camera arrangement, which appears to be quite distinctive.

The bottom of the device has a speaker grille, a USB Type C port, and two microphones. The power on and off button, which also functions as a fingerprint sensor, and the volume rocker are located on the right side. Two more microphones are located on top, and a SIM card slot (which accepts both physical SIM and eSIM) is located on the left side of the frame.

The 3.4-inch FHD IPS cover display on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is identical to that of its predecessor. It features a 60Hz refresh rate, 306PPI pixel density, and a 1,600nit peak brightness. A refresh rate of 120Hz is supported by the 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X 120Hz Infinity Flex primary display. It works well with a peak brightness of 2,600 nits.

HDR10+, which works brilliantly on all streaming providers, is supported by the device. The accuracy of the colours is particularly noteworthy.

We had trouble using one hand to access the apps in the far corners of the screen due to the size of the screen. Nonetheless, the display quality was good enough for watching movies, and the refresh rate was smooth and superb.

Review of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6

With its cover screen that doesn’t access every app, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 has restricted utility. Its restricted functionality prevents users from taking full advantage of the cover screen, even if it has widgets like a calendar, calculator, dialer, and gallery. Apps like YouTube, Maps, and WhatsApp are accessible through Samsung Labs in Settings.
It’s efficient for texting or viewing directions without opening the device, despite its compact design. The cover screen’s continuation capability is also supported by compatible apps.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 includes interactive wallpapers with geometric forms, light and shadow effects, and vibrant colour palettes. The wallpaper adapts to the colour of each device, striking a balance between aesthetics and function. Adjusting the brightness and contrast optimises the display’s energy consumption. Elegant animations expand space using circles and lines, and the wallpaper responds interactively to display angles, resulting in joyful events.

One thing we appreciated was the ability to generate AI wallpapers. You can do it on the inside screen; however, due to the form factor, the cover screen recommends which wallpaper will look ideal.

The audio quality is excellent despite the compact form factor. With this device, you will enjoy multimedia.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Review: Performance and Cameras

The Flip phone features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and up to 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. The RAM option is the same across the series, regardless of the storage you choose; however, it previously had an 8GB RAM model, but the base variant is now 12GB.

It is powered by Android 14 and runs OneUI 6.1.1. The software performs fairly well. We experienced no latency or stuttering while using the phone. In addition, you will receive major OS and security updates for the next seven years. You will receive updates up to Android 20 and 21.

We spent a lot of time playing games on this device’s highest settings, and the performance was really good. Call of Duty: Mobile performed flawlessly on all settings, allowing the phone to play games at a solid 120 frames per second. Because of the larger vapour cooling chamber, the phone did not appear to overheat when playing games, and performance wasn’t affected either.

A vapour chamber, which efficiently disperses heat to avoid overheating, is a feature exclusive to the Galaxy Z Flip 6 among the Z Flip series.

It’s time to discuss the AI features. Custom AI-generated wallpapers and interactive Flipsuit phone cases allow users to express themselves while having more fun. The interpreter mode is the best feature of this phone. You will adore this flip if you travel frequently. A function called Interpreter allows users to converse face-to-face using two screens and translate on the go. It is referred to by the firm as Conversation Mode, and it could come in useful when visiting a place where you don’t speak the language.

To make it easier for you to understand lectures and other presentations, it also provides one-way translation. It might be necessary to download a language pack for some languages. In addition, Live Translate—which translates phone calls in real-time on your device—is now available for several well-known third-party apps in addition to Samsung’s native call applications.

With the all-new Sketch to Image feature, you can produce more intricate artwork by just sketching or drawing on the images on the Note or Gallery screens to generate image options. You can create an AI image by doodling over an image. You can be creative with this feature.

For further creative possibilities, Portrait Studio generates a range of distinct portrait styles, including 3D cartoon and watercolour, and supports JPG, HEIC (HEIF), BMP, and PNG files. You have the freedom to change your look by selecting your preferred style using unique portrait effects (comic, 3D character, watercolour, or sketch) that are generated by AI in my photo. It can’t be transparent in the background. Working with Generative Portraits in Editing Upon saving, a watermark is superimposed on the image output to identify it as an AI-generated image.

With the help of Instant Slow-Mo, you can quickly slow down a video while still enjoying a fluid watching experience. At the top left of the gallery screen is an option that lets you save the segment you saw in Instant Slow-mo right away. You don’t even need to save the saved video as a separate slow-motion file to share it using the share button. To ensure that your friends and family can watch your videos as well, you now have the option to save or share them immediately.

The wallpaper can be automatically updated in real-time according to the weather and time with the AI-powered Photo Ambient. By assessing your wallpaper and making adjustments like shifting the clock or altering the frame colour to make the background image stand out, you can also effortlessly create a cohesive appearance and feel with the help of suggested screen layout alternatives.

Samsung has introduced PDF Overlay Translation, a feature that converts PDF files into a downloaded language pack, available in the Notes app. Additionally, Samsung has enhanced Note Assist, offering automatic transcription, translation, and summarising of meetings by recording your voice in Notes, enhancing its user experience.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has an extremely excellent AI feature implementation. Note that your smartphone needs a network connection and a Samsung Account log-in to use all of these Galaxy AI features.

Review of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6

There have been enhancements made to the camera of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The previous model included three cameras: a 10-megapixel selfie camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 12-megapixel primary camera with OIS. In addition to the 50MP primary camera with 2X digital zoom and AI zoom for an enhanced photography experience with up to 10x zooming in, it now has a 12MP ultra-wide camera on the cover display. It has a 10 MP front camera as well.

The primary camera on the Z Flip 6 captures detailed, high-quality photos. Both primary and ultra-wide images have natural colours. With incredibly natural colour science, most of the photos will give you the best photographic experience possible. The highlights and shadows are very true to life, and the dynamic range is outstanding, producing really good photographs. White balance accuracy is constant.

The portrait pictures are really amazing. Samsung once again shines in this area with its breathtaking photographs. The photos you receive have excellent edge detection and skin tones, and the facial details look very real.

In close-up photos, the details and sharpness look great. It performs fairly well overall, and the colours are also rather lovely.

Despite the absence of a macro camera on this phone, we attempted to take some images, which can be seen here.

The selfies are not as good as they could be with the primary camera. On the other hand, the front camera offers crisp and detailed images everywhere. In addition, the colour tones in the selfies appear realistic, and the portrait selfies have flawless edge detection.

Let us now discuss low-light photography. In dimly lit environments, this clamshell-style phone can take good pictures with very little noise and good quality. The sharpness levels are also decent. When there is very little light, it is better to use the night mode.

When taking pictures in low light, the Flip 6 performs exceptionally well at minimising noise. The quality of the details is unaffected by very dim lighting. The colours are nice this time. We could find no faults with the low-light capture, and the clarity levels are amazing.

The Flip 6 incorporates several social media-optimised features that the firm has included in consideration of how social media is used these days. When the phone is in Flex mode, it can be opened to a 90-degree angle and held like a camcorder to capture video. Zooming in is also more fluid than when in camcorder mode.

FlexCam’s new Auto Zoom feature lets it automatically recognise the subject and zoom in and out of the frame before making any necessary changes to get the optimal perspective for your photo. In Flex Camera mode, one may identify subjects, such as people or pets, and the AI will then adjust the zoom ratio to capture the best possible shot. It should be noted that manually adjusting the zoom or switching between the front and back cameras will cause the auto-zoom mode to deactivate.

Review of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6

It’s a really good improvement from 3,700 mAh to 4,000 mAh for the battery. It also supports 15W wireless charging, 4.5W reverse wireless charging, and 25W wired fast charging. The charging speed remains the same. When used moderately and normally, the battery will last the entire day. When charging the phone from zero to 100 per cent, the charger takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.

Verdict

In terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is a pretty solidly constructed phone.
The gaming performance of the device was excellent. The larger vapour cooling chamber ensured good performance even as the phone heated up during gameplay. In comparison to the previous generation Flip, the camera department has seen some significant advancements, and we are quite satisfied with the results. You can get excellent macros, portraits, and low-light images.

Galaxy Z Flip 6 AI features

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a brilliant interpreter. Thanks to the ability to translate conversations in real time between the main screen and the cover screen, users may now converse in many languages.

The device’s performance is outstanding, and you won’t be disappointed with the way it appears or the quality of the display. To sum up, take a look at the Z Flip 6, considering its software, gaming capabilities, AI features, and cameras.
