Apple plans to launch its own modem technology on “niche models” in 2025: Report

Apple was forced to push back the release of the modem until at least the next year due to issues with overheating and performance issues with the modem project.

Key Highlights

  • Apple plans to launch exclusive modem technology on select models by 2025.
  • Despite reducing reliance on Qualcomm chips, Apple faces challenges.
  • Analyst Mark Gurman suggests discontinuing Qualcomm may pave the way for future advancements

Apple is allegedly planning to launch its exclusive modem technology on select models as early as 2025, as reported by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. The company has attempted to lessen its reliance on Qualcomm chips, but it has encountered several obstacles that have caused disruptions.

In a Bloomberg report, Apple Analyst Mark Gurman stated that while Apple’s decision to discontinue Qualcomm modem chips may not provide immediate benefits, it may pave the way for greater things in the future. Additionally, the corporation advances with a tabletop robot; Google’s latest Pixel smartphones demonstrate the state of artificial intelligence; and third parties will be able to access the iPhone payment chip.

With the development of new processors for the iPhone and iPad, Apple’s custom silicon team has been able to remove Intel Corp. CPUs from the company’s complete Mac portfolio. Additionally, they created the Touch ID and Face ID technologies that are now included on all key Apple devices. The group has also assisted in customising batteries and screens for suppliers. Better photography, more sophisticated wireless device syncing, quicker data downloads, and some of the sharpest OLED screens available today are all results of this work.

Apple has used Qualcomm Inc.’s modem chips to connect phones to cellular networks for more than ten years. But Apple began developing its own modem architecture in 2018, and it is already quite dependable and state-of-the-art.

Due to difficulties with the modem project, such as overheating and performance problems, Apple had to postpone the modem’s release until at least the next year. Apple has stated that it pays Qualcomm too much for modems, thus the company decided to save money and extend its supply arrangement through March 2027.

“The rollout will take place on a gradual basis — starting with niche models — and take a few years to complete. In a sign of this slow transition, Apple extended its supplier agreement with Qualcomm through March 2027,” He said.

Mark Gurman claims that Apple intends to incorporate its modem architecture into a new wireless chip that manages Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, possibly enhancing battery life and dependability. To save money and space inside the iPhone, this might also be integrated into the core system on a chip (SoC) of the gadget. Apple may use the money it saves by moving away from Qualcomm to fund the development of new features and parts. Soon, this move may or may not be beneficial.
