YouTube has introduced a new tool that allows creators to make YouTube Shorts with durations of up to three minutes, regardless of aspect ratio. The latest YouTube update also adds the option to create templates, mix YouTube videos directly into Shorts, and a new Shorts Trends page for content updates.
While announcing the updates coming to Shorts, YouTube said, “Get ready, Shorts creators and fans! Today we’re announcing updates to YouTube Shorts, making it easier and more fun than ever to create and connect. Whether you’re looking to discover something new or dive into creating, these tools will empower you to express yourself, get inspired, engage more deeply and keep up with the latest trends.”
Beginning October 15, creators will be able to put out videos up to 3 minutes in length, a much-requested feature. This change only applies to square or taller videos and will not affect those posted before October 15. The player’s look has been modified to prioritise creative content while allowing viewers to focus on their preferred content.
Users can create their own unique style by reusing a favourite Short with templates. They will also be able to match clips to the latest trends, add their own flair and tap “Remix” on a Short that inspires.
Shorts will soon allow users to access an immense number of YouTube content directly from their camera, allowing for quick remixing of clips from favourite videos, and music videos, and even pulling from various clips on YouTube.
Google DeepMind’s Veo video generation model will be incorporated into YouTube Shorts later this year, allowing creators to produce more engaging video backgrounds and standalone clips, increasing Shorts’ dreaminess.
The Shorts Trends page on mobile lets visitors keep informed about the current trends in their own country, be inspired, and participate in the conversation. Furthermore, users may preview comments from the Shorts feed before proceeding to the comments feed to remain up to date on the current trends.

YouTube is also introducing a “Show fewer Shorts” option, allowing viewers to tailor their YouTube experience to their tastes. This may be done by clicking the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of any Shorts grid in their Home feed.
