Tech behemoths Google and Samsung have released the Android XR, a new operating system designed for this next generation of computing, to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s AR headset. The company claims that Samsung’s Project Moohan will be the first to use the new operating system for AR headsets.
“Today, we’re introducing Android XR, a new operating system built for this next generation of computing. Created in collaboration with Samsung, Android XR combines years of investment in AI, AR and VR to bring helpful experiences to headsets and glasses,” said Google.

AI, AR, and VR technologies are all integrated into Google’s Android XR, a new operating system created in partnership with Samsung that improves the user experience on glasses and headsets.
“XR offers infinite possibilities, creating a dynamic spatial canvas where users’ sight, sound and motion combine to interact with the outside world. A world that will unlock unprecedented experiences across core areas of life, from working and learning to entertainment, gaming and even health and wellness,” Samsung said.
With the release of XR, the company is building a strong ecosystem for Android XR developers and device makers, employing tools such as ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR to help developers create apps and games for upcoming Android XR devices.
Headsets will enable users to switch easily between virtual and real-world experiences, with apps and content available. Gemini, an AI assistant, may help with conversations, device control, and planning, and it can also lead tasks and research topics based on human intent.
Google is redesigning popular headset apps, including the ability to watch YouTube and Google TV on a virtual big screen, relive memories with 3D photos, explore the world with Google Maps in Immersive View, and multitask with Chrome’s multiple virtual screens. Circle to Search allows users to rapidly access information with a simple gesture. Android users may access their favourite smartphone and tablet apps via Google Play, with additional immersive entertainment and games for XR expected next year.
Android XR will soon support all-day help glasses, providing fashionable and comfortable solutions that work smoothly with other Android devices. These glasses will give Gemini-like information, such as directions, translations, and message summaries, immediately in your line of sight or in your ear, allowing you to access and use the power of Gemini without having to reach for your phone.
