Pilgrim security has always been a key part of Mahakumbh. With millions of devotees attending the event, managing the crowds is an uphill battle. This year, more than 2,600 CCTV cameras will monitor the movement of devotees at the congregation. These cameras are powered by AI for better surveillance. UP Police will also use tethered drones to monitor the crowds aerially. Additionally, an anti-drone system will limit other flying devices from accessing the congregation grounds.

The security at Mahakumbh 2025 isn’t just limited to land and sky. There are underwater drones in place that can dive up to 100 metres and transmit real-time activity reports to the authorities. Furthermore, remote-controlled lifebuoys have been deployed at the event to swiftly reach any location in case of an emergency and help the pilgrims in need. The Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) will be the central monitoring hub for the Mahakumbh.

Special cyber security arrangements have also been made for Mahakumbh 2025. 56 dedicated cyber warriors have been deployed to tackle digital fraud and other malicious activities. Devotees can report fraudulent websites, social media scams, and fake links at the Mahakumbh cyber police station. 40 Variable Messaging Displays (VMDs) have been set up to raise awareness about cyber threats.

Apart from monitoring and security, Artificial Intelligence will play another key role at Mahakumbh 2025. The Kumbh SahAIyak app will offer round-the-clock digital assistance to pilgrims and devotees in 11 languages including Hindi, English, Marathi, Telugu, and more. This app acts as a digital guide, offering cultural insights to users. It can also provide navigation-related assistance whenever necessary. This app has been developed by UPDESCO and Prayagraj Mela Authority. It uses Ola Krutrim’s Large Language Model for AI-based tasks.

To top things off, a fleet of 2,000 drones will narrate the tales of ‘Prayag Mahatyam’ and ‘Samudra Manthan’ at the Mahakumbh. This drone show will be hosted at the Sangam Nose. Ten 360-degree virtual reality stalls have been set up at prime locations in the Kumbh Mela area. Devotees can view immersive videos of Peshwai (Grand procession of Akhadas), Snaan (auspicious bathing days), and Ganga Aarti using these virtual reality headsets.
