Lava Storm Lite 5G Review: A reliable and robust smartphone under Rs 8,000

We used the Storm Lite 5G for a week. Here’s what we think of the smartphone.

Lava’s newest entry-level offering, Storm Lite, holds a lot of promise. Priced at Rs 8,000, this smartphone flaunts a 120Hz LCD panel, a 50MP main camera, and a big 5,000mAh battery pack. It is also one of the first smartphones in India to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 SoC. If you’re on a shoestring budget, the Storm Lite looks like a good deal on paper. But how does it fare in daily use? We used it for a week to find out. Here is our Lava Storm Lite review.

Here’s what you get inside Lava Storm Lite’s retail box:

  • Smartphone
  • 15W power adapter
  • USB Type-A to Type-C cable
  • SIM ejector
  • Service card

Lava Storm Lite follows the design language of other recent budget offerings from the company. The rear camera layout is inspired by the vanilla iPhone models of the past few years. The flat plastic back has a matte texture. The Lava logo is embossed on the bottom left side. The back panel does not register any smudges or fingerprints and has a nice in-hand feel.

The plastic frame houses the volume keys and the side button on its right edge. The side button doubles as the fingerprint sensor. At the bottom lie the 3.5mm headphone jack, primary microphone, USB Type-C port, and speaker grille. The hybrid SIM tray is positioned on the left edge.

The IPS LCD panel has a 720p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The bezels surrounding this dispaly get very chunky around the chin. The selfie camera is housed in a waterdrop notch at the top. The touch response offered by the display is fine. It can register the subtle touches, offerings a decent scrolling experience. The brightness intensity leaves a lot to be desired while using the smartphone in an outdoor environment with harsh sunlight.

Lava Storm Lite 5G Review: Design and Display

Lava Storm Lite offers a decent content viewing experience. The LCD panel isn’t able to produce deep blacks like an AMOLED display, but the colours are vivid and punchy. The resolution is limited to 720p, which isn’t bad considering the price. The solo speaker produces a loud output, but it is a little boxy.

The Storm Lite is rated IP64 for dust and water resistance. This is a pretty good rating for this segment. The smartphone can guard itself against water splashes. Taking a phone call in light rain does not do any damage to the device.

Lava Storm Lite 5G Review: Performance and Cameras

Powering the Lava Storm Lite is the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 processor. It is one of the first smartphones in India to be powered by this chipset. Equipped with 4GB of RAM, the Storm Lite is available in 2 storage variants (expandable up to 1TB):

  • 64GB: Rs 7,999
  • 128GB: Rs 8,499

Here’s how the smartphone performed in Geekbench 6 and AnTuTu benchmark tests:

  • Geekbench 6: 739 (single core) | 1,979 (multi core)
  • AnTuTu: 397,926

benchmark

During the week-long review period, the Lava Storm Lite did a good job of handling basic tasks like calling, instant messaging, web browsing, media streaming, and navigation. However, it suffers from the common flaws of this segment. Apps take time to load, and juggling among them isn’t as seamless as one would like. If you need more power out of your device, we’d recommend looking for something in the sub-Rs 15,000 price bracket.

Lava Storm Lite 5G Review: Performance and Cameras

There isn’t much to say about the gaming performance of the Lava Storm Lite due to its limited power specs. The gameplay in FPS titles like Free Fire Max is riddled with frame drops. Games like Subway Surfers and Candy Crush Saga offer a much better experience.

Lava Storm Lite 5G Review: Performance and Cameras

Lava Storm Lite runs stock Android 15 OS out of the box. There is no bloatware on the device. You get a good range of customisation options for the wallpaper, lock screen, home screen, app icons, and charging animation. On top of that, the smartphone offers handy features like App Clone, Hidden Apps, and App Lock. If you want to boost the smartphone’s performance, the software allows you to virtually expand its RAM by another 4GB. Additionally, the ‘DuraSpeed’ tool allocates more resources to the foreground app if you need a bit more power.

The 5,000mAh battery pack on this smartphone lasts an entire day with ease. During the review period, our daily tasks on the Lava Storm Lite comprised video calling, emailing, instant messaging, browsing social media, web surfing, media streaming, and gaming. On average, we ended our day with a 20% charge still left in the tank. The 15W power adapter provided in the box took just over 2 hours to fully charge the smartphone.

camera

The rear camera panel of the Lava Storm Lite houses a 50MP main sensor. A 5MP front-facing camera is placed inside a waterdrop notch on the display. The 50MP primary shooter takes decent pictures in outdoor daylight conditions. While there is some softness to the images, the gap in details is bridged by the tasteful colour profile. In limited lighting conditions, however, the smartphone struggles to light up the shot and resolve the noise.

Portrait Shots

Portrait shots taken by the Lava Storm Lite are well-focused, but they lack the optimum background blur. The 5MP front-facing camera takes good selfies, keeping the skin tone and texture correction effects to a minimum. What we like about the smartphone is that its native Camera app offers nifty features like GIF maker, AI emoji (face filters), and Dual-view video. The 50MP main camera can shoot 2K videos at 30fps. Meanwhile, the 5MP front-facing camera can record 1,080p videos at 30fps.

Verdict

The Lava Storm Lite is a decent buy at Rs 8,000. It is designed for casual users who don’t demand a lot of power from their smartphones. The biggest highlight of the device is its clean, bloatware-free OS. It doesn’t pester you with ads disguised as notifications. Additionally, you get a bunch of customisation options to personalise the look of the device. The 50MP main camera puts up a decent performance in outdoor daylight conditions. The camera struggles in limited lighting, but that’s an issue you’ll find in every smartphone in this price bracket.

Lava Storm Lite: Pros

  • Big display
  • Good battery life
  • Bloatware-free OS
  • IP64 rating
  • Expandable memory

Lava Storm Lite: Cons

  • Slow charging
  • Not meant for power-intensive tasks
