Sony ULT Field 5 Review: Party animal with a few quirks

A compact Bluetooth speaker that loves dhol beats, dance floors, and drama in equal measure.

If you have been hunting for a Sony ULT Field 5 speaker that can turn a casual gathering into a legit mini rave, this one lands right in that sweet spot. In this Sony ULT Field 5 review, I will say this straight: it is a portable party Bluetooth speaker with punchy bass, smart lighting, and a design that feels more premium than plasticky. Yet, like that friend who is great at parties but not so great at subtlety, the ULT Field 5 has a few quirks you should know about before you hit “buy now”.

Design

The Sony ULT Field 5 looks like it was designed for people who want their speakers to blend into minimalist living rooms and still be ready for impromptu dance-offs. The cuboid shape with rounded edges gives it a clean, understated profile. Wrapped in a fine mesh grille with a solid-feeling frame underneath, it feels robust enough to survive everyday bumps and the occasional over-enthusiastic party guest.

Available in off-white and black, the unit plays it safe with colours but still manages to look stylish. The off-white version, in particular, leans into that premium-lounge vibe instead of the typical “plastic party box” aesthetic you see in this mid-premium wireless speaker segment. Despite the lighter tone, stains and scuffs are surprisingly manageable and wipe off easily.

Controls sit on top where they are easy to reach. You get play and pause, volume keys, Bluetooth pairing and a dedicated ULT button that triggers the bass boost. At the back, under a neat flap, sit the AUX input and USB Type-C port. This port not only charges the speaker but can also top up your phone when needed, which is handy during long sessions.

Then there are the lights. The Sony party lights speaker persona really comes alive with multi-colour rings on the sides that pulse and swirl in sync with your music. Fire up a party playlist, and you instantly get that “mini-club in the living room” feel. You can tweak the light patterns using Sony’s app to match your mood, from a chill evening to a full-blown house party.

At about 3.3 kg, it is not featherweight, but the detachable strap makes it perfectly manageable for balcony sessions, terrace parties or a quick trip to a friend’s place. Think “portable home speaker” rather than “take-it-on-a-trek” gadget.

Performance

Under the grille, the ULT Field 5 packs two tweeters and one X-Balanced woofer, backed by Sony’s ULT bass modes branded as ULT1 and ULT2. The idea is simple. ULT1 keeps things relatively balanced, while ULT2 pushes the low end forward for those who believe bass is a lifestyle choice.

With Bollywood, pop and EDM, the tuning works very well. Garba anthems, Arijit ballads, Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” and Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” all get a lively, punchy treatment. The bass is strong, tight and fun without completely smothering vocals. This is not a chest-thumping tower system, but for its size, the low end is satisfying, especially for small to medium rooms.

Where the speaker really shines is in the mids and vocals. Singers sound clear and intimate, guitars and pianos have good texture, and acoustic tracks do not feel lost in a muddy mix. Treble is reasonably detailed too and avoids being harsh, even at higher volumes.

However, there are two important caveats. First, push the volume to the absolute max, and some distortion creeps in, especially on bass-heavy tracks. It is not unusable, but you can hear the strain. The ULT Field 5 is happiest at mid to high volume, not 100 per cent.

Second, despite offering stereo, this is still a front-firing design. The soundstage feels a bit narrow for the price. If you are sitting directly in front, it sounds great. Move to the sides or behind, and you lose some impact, which matters if you want that “music everywhere” effect from a single IP67 outdoor speaker at a party.

Connectivity is modern and mostly fuss-free. You get Bluetooth 5.3, LDAC support for higher quality streams from compatible devices, and the ability to pair two Field 5 units for wider stereo. There is also Party Connect, so you can link multiple Sony speakers and drown your neighbours in perfectly synced playlists, if that is your thing.

Battery and everyday use

Sony’s app support is actually useful here. Through the companion app, you can adjust EQ, switch ULT modes, change lighting patterns and enable DJ-style effects if you are feeling dramatic. The interface is simple enough that even non-techy users will figure it out in minutes.

Battery life is another highlight, with Sony rating it at up to 25 hours of battery life on a single charge. In real-world use with ULT mode on and moderate to high volume, you are more likely to see around 13 to 15 hours, which is still solid for most real-life use. Quick charging support helps if you forget to plug it in before guests arrive.

Durability is also a strong point. With an IP67 rating, the ULT Field 5 is comfortable around dust, splashes and the occasional drink spill. It fits naturally into the role of a semi-rugged IP67 outdoor speaker that can move from living room to balcony to poolside without anxiety.

What you do not get is a built-in microphone or voice assistant support. No hands-free calls, no “Hey Google” or “Alexa” from the speaker itself. For some users, this will not matter. At this price, however, many will expect at least the option.

Verdict

The Sony ULT Field 5 is a very capable portable party Bluetooth speaker that nails most of the basics and adds a layer of fun with its lighting and bass tuning. It feels well built, sounds lively, and suits anyone who wants one speaker that can handle home listening, small gatherings and festive nights with equal ease. If pricing hovers around its usual discounted bracket below the Rs 25,000 mark, it sits comfortably in the mid-premium wireless speaker space.

Sony Ult Filed 5 Price: Rs 24,950.
