How to change the chat bubble colour in Google Messages (App & Web)?

Google is slowly adding more personalisation options to its messaging app for Android.

Over the last few months, Google has rolled out some important features for its Messages app. While instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram enjoy the majority of the market share, Google Messages is a reliable alternative to the two. With RCS support, the native Android messaging app can now showcase its aesthetic upgrades. Here’s how you can change the chat bubble colour in Google Messages.

Before you begin

Make sure the Google Messages app on your phone is updated to the latest version. Since this is a relatively newer feature, older app versions may not support it. The app lets you change the colour of chat bubbles for individual conversations. There is no way to change the colour of chat bubbles in all conversations at once. Hopefully, Google will add a universal option to do so in future.

The web portal for Google Messages, which was introduced last year, does not have this option yet. The aesthetic options for the web portal are limited to the day/night themes. There are four options on offer.

  • Light
  • Dark
  • System Default
  • High Contrast
