How to use Automatic Window Tiling in macOS Sequoia

Using this feature, you can snap four windows into a quarter layout on your Mac’s screen.

The split-screen mode on Mac may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is an important feature for multitaskers who don’t have a multi-monitor setup. Windows has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to multi-tasking features, leaving its macOS counterpart behind by a long margin. However, that may change with the new macOS Sequoia. Let’s take a look at how you can use the ‘Automatic Window Tiling’ feature on macOS Sequoia.

Before you begin

The new macOS Sequoia is yet to be officially released. However, you can install its Developer Beta version on your Mac to try out the new features. Go to System Settings>General>Software Update and click on ‘Beta Updates’. Select the Developer Beta from the list.

The beta OS versions are generally unstable and bug-ridden. While you may want to use the new features before everyone else, it can cause the performance of your device to take a hit. If you have a secondary Mac lying around, we would recommend using it over your primary device.

The Automatic Window Tiling feature on macOS Sequoia eliminates the need to use third-party apps like Mosiac and Window Focus. However, the native feature still isn’t as fleshed out as its Windows counterpart. For starters, it only works for a maximum of 4 windows. If you want more control over the process, using a third-party app may still be your best option.

Step 1: Click on a window and drag it to an edge or a corner of the screen. The former will create a half-window while the latter will create a quarter-window.

Step 2: A grey/white outline will appear on the screen, previewing the new panel for the window. Release the window to place it in its new position. Pressing the Option key while dragging the window highlights the two halves and doesn’t require you to move it all the way to the edge.

Step 3: To get rid of the border/margin around the window, go to System Settings>Desktop and Dock>Windows and turn off the toggle switch for Tiled windows have margin.

Step 4: To automatically arrange all the open windows on your Mac, click on the green icon at the top left corner of the screen.

Step 5: You can select a position for the current window, or choose a layout for all of the active windows.

Step 6: You can also use these keyboard shortcuts to snap a window on either half of the screen on your Mac:

function + control + left/right/up/down

function + control + shift + left/right/up/down (snaps all possible windows to available panels)

function + control + R (go to the previous size)

Step 7: To view all of the keyboard shortcuts, click on Window and select Move & Resize.
