Airtel added two new features to tackle spam calls

These updates attempt to keep spammers at bay while also improving the tool's overall performance.

Airtel India has announced two important advancements to its AI-powered spam detection tool, which has marked over 27.5 billion calls as SPAM to its consumers in response to the huge number of calls classified as SPAM. The firm intends to fix this issue with a new feature. Airtel India has made two key additions to its AI-powered spam detection technology. The new features include expanded coverage for international calls and SMS, as well as SPAM alert displays in Marathi and nine other vernacular languages.

According to the announcement, Airtel customers will now get SPAM notifications for calls and SMS messages in their favourite Indian language. This new capability is believed to be accessible in 10 regional languages, with intentions to expand more in the future. Airtel’s AI-powered tool will now check and notify users of any SPAM calls and SMSes coming from overseas networks.

According to Airtel, the improved AI-powered SPAM solution will now alert customers to calls and messages from both local and foreign lines in 10 Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, Punjabi, and Urdu. It should be noted that users who use Android smartphones can only receive SPAM alert messages in regional languages. Thankfully, these functionalities remain free for users and will be activated automatically for all Airtel subscribers without the need to submit a service request.

To recall, Airtel’s industry-first anti-SPAM tool, which was launched in September 2024, has significantly reduced spam calls, with Airtel identifying 27.5 billion calls thus far, resulting in a 16% decrease in SPAM calls since its launch, a significant improvement from the 1560 spam calls per second it previously identified.

Commenting on the initiative, Siddharth Sharma, Director Marketing and CEO Connected Homes, Bharti Airtel, said: “Customers and their feedback are at the heart of everything we do. After carefully analysing customer feedback, we have enhanced our solutions to better serve the linguistic diversity of India. Additionally, with the growing volume of SPAM traffic shifting to foreign networks, we have decided to expand our AI-powered tool to scan all SMS messages and phone calls originating from international numbers. Our dedicated team of engineers and data scientists will continue to refine and enhance our offerings, ensuring we stay ahead of any and all emerging threats.”
