Apple brings iOS 18.3 update; Notification Summaries now disabled by default

This is an opt-in functionality that allows users to select which app notifications should be summarised.

With iOS 18.3 for iPhone, Apple has made a small modification to Notification Summaries, a function that was previously criticised for producing inaccurate summaries of news headlines. The update now enables Visual Intelligence to add events to the Calendar from posters, and it makes changes to the Calculator app and Apple Intelligence’s opt-in method.

iOS 18.3 Update

With the iOS 18.3 update, Notification Summaries are no longer available for the News & Entertainment category and are now disabled by default. The most recent version warns users that it may contain errors and disables the feature by default. Users who choose to use it will be able to do so once it has been restored.

Apple added the notification summaries feature to iOS 18.1, which condenses information from notifications for fast scanning. This is an opt-in functionality that allows users to select which app notifications should be summarised.

However, since its inception, the AI feature has been observed to produce inaccurate summaries of notifications from news apps. The BBC alerted Apple in December 2024 about false information being added to AI summaries in response to Apple Intelligence‘s incorrect claim of Luigi Mangione’s suicide. A user provided a screenshot in which an AI tool misinterpreted a New York Times article, claiming that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested, despite the fact that the original news notification stated that an arrest warrant had been issued by the International Criminal Court.

Aside from that, Apple updated notification summaries to include italicised text for improved clarity.

Apple has also improved its Visual Intelligence function, which allows users to add events from posters or flyers to their Calendars and identify a larger range of plant and animal species. This feature is only available on iPhone 16 models and can be accessed via the Camera Control button.

Apple restored the ability to repeat the last mathematical operation by tapping the equals icon in the Calculator app, which was discontinued in iOS 18.3, as well as bug fixes for Genmoji, HealthKit, and Writing Tools.

Additionally, users who do not wish to use the AI suite must actively opt out of Apple Intelligence, which is accessible through Settings.

Users must go to the Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings pane and disable the Apple Intelligence toggle in order to disable Apple Intelligence. This will turn off their device’s Apple Intelligence features.
