Google’s AI-powered Veo 3 is joining forces with YouTube Shorts this summer

YouTube Shorts is about to get an AI-powered upgrade—but should creators be thrilled or terrified?

If you’ve spent any time scrolling through YouTube Shorts lately, you’ve witnessed its meteoric rise firsthand. Google’s bite-sized video format has surged an astounding 186% in viewership over the past year, now averaging an eye-popping 200 billion daily views. And if you thought Shorts were catchy now, brace yourself: Google’s frighteningly good Veo 3 AI video generator is set to integrate with YouTube Shorts later this summer.

AI Videos Meet Short-form Content

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced this significant upgrade at the recent Cannes festival, touting Veo 3 as a creative tool that could open exciting new avenues for content creators. Google previously teased us with AI tools like Dream Screen—generating AI-crafted video backgrounds from simple text prompts—but Veo 3 is a whole new beast.

The timing couldn’t be better. Short-form content dominates social media platforms, and YouTube Shorts specifically caters to this bite-sized consumption trend. Originally capped at 30 seconds and now expanded to 60, Shorts is tailor-made for today’s shrinking attention spans. Veo 3’s current outputs—short, crisp 8-second clips—align perfectly with this trend.

Stunning, Sometimes Uncanny Results

Unveiled at Google’s I/O conference, Veo 3 has made waves for its ability to transform simple text prompts into stunningly realistic video and audio content. We’re talking “is this real?” levels of quality, often indistinguishable from genuine, filmed content. It’s brilliant, fascinating, and frankly, a bit unsettling.

However, one small hiccup remains: Veo 3 currently generates landscape-oriented 720p videos. Shorts, however, thrive on vertical, portrait-oriented content, making compatibility less than perfect out of the box. Google is expected to tweak Veo 3 specifically for Shorts, ensuring seamless, vertically optimised AI-generated clips.

Cost Factor: Creativity Comes at a Price

Mohan didn’t address cost specifics at Cannes, but don’t expect Veo 3 to be budget-friendly. Right now, accessing Veo 3 means subscribing to Google’s steep USD 250 per month AI Ultra plan, capped at 125 clips monthly. Integrating this into YouTube Shorts could signal either more accessible plans or additional revenue opportunities for creators.

Game Changer or Gimmick?

Whether you’re excited about unlimited creative possibilities or unnerved by the rise of hyper-realistic AI videos, one thing is clear: Veo 3’s integration with YouTube Shorts marks a pivotal moment in digital content creation. It might be the boost Shorts creators have dreamed of—or the start of an uncanny valley nightmare. Either way, it’s sure to keep audiences glued to their screens and creators scrambling to keep up.
