HDR10+ streaming is now available on Netflix

Customers with a right subscription can experience enhanced contrast and bright colours.

Netflix recently introduced HDR10+ streaming to improve the picture clarity as well as detail in TV series and movies. Netflix intends to grow its HDR10+ content catalogue and employ the AV1 media codec for optimal bandwidth utilisation. Users must have a Netflix Premium subscription to access HDR10+ content.

According to Netflix’s most recent blog post, the company is releasing HDR10+ content for AV1-enabled devices, improving the viewing experience for certified HDR10+ devices. The dynamic metadata in HDR10+ content improves image quality and accuracy.

The blog post says, “We are excited to announce that we are now streaming HDR10+ content on our service for AV1-enabled devices, enhancing the viewing experience for certified HDR10+ devices, which previously only received HDR10 content. The dynamic metadata included in our HDR10+ content improves the quality and accuracy of the picture when viewed on these devices.”

According to the video streaming platform, HDR streaming has increased by 300% over the last five years. Since introducing HDR with Marco Polo, Netflix has added over 11,000 hours of HDR content for members to enjoy. It is now introducing support for HDR10+ to strengthen its HDR ecosystem and create a more immersive viewing experience.

Those who are unaware. the industry recognizes three popular formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ using metadata embedded in content to guide playback devices on image display.

Netflix has set up HDR10+ on their platform with the AV1 video codec, which was standardised by the Alliance for Open Media in 2018. This efficient codec is said to improve visual quality, reduce playback delay, and boost streaming resolution. AV1-SDR is already the second most-streamed codec on Netflix, trailing only H.264/AVC. With HDR10+ streaming available to AV1, it is likely to quickly become the most streamed format.
