iPhone 17 display details tipped again; likely to include a higher refresh rate with ProMotion feature

Base versions will include ProMotion panels with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

According to a recent rumour based on supply chain information, the ProMotion feature will also be available on the standard iPhone 17. Since the vanilla and Plus versions of the iPhone 17 have maintained their original 60Hz refresh rates, this supports earlier speculation that the entire range may feature a ProMotion high refresh rate display. Even the most current iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models only feature 60Hz panels; Apple usually only makes high refresh rate screens for the Pro models.

A recent rumour indicates that the vanilla iPhone 17 might also include the ProMotion feature, which would validate earlier rumours that the entire iPhone 17 series might have ProMotion screens. Apple’s Pro iPhones are known for having high refresh rate displays.

Like its larger siblings, the iPhone 17 is expected to sport a high refresh rate display, according to Tipster Digital Chat Station. The speculated iPhone 17 Air/Slim’s refresh rate hasn’t been confirmed yet, though.

In contrast to the iPhone 16 and its predecessors’ 60Hz refresh rate, The Elec claimed in February that the iPhone 17 would sport a 120Hz LTPO OLED panel. ET News revealed in November that an LTPO screen might be included in the complete iPhone 17 lineup.

Base versions will thus include ProMotion panels with a changeable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

All iPhone 17 models will come with LTPO panels from Samsung and LG, a high-end Pro series technology that enhances screen responsiveness and smoothness while consuming less battery, according to ET News.

For more seamless navigation throughout iOS and the iPhone UI, a fast refresh rate enables fluid animations and transitions. Social networking and browsing experiences are improved by this responsiveness. If the content needs a lower refresh rate, the LTPO panel can dynamically adjust the screen refresh frequency, saving battery life.

In order to enable an always-on display, Apple has been adding 120Hz ProMotion screens to its Pro iPhone models over the last three years. The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, while the iPhone 16 Plus has a larger 6.7-inch display operating at 60Hz. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max sport Super Retina XDR OLED panels with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and dimensions of 6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively.

Previously, Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants announced in September that all iPhone 17 models in the 2025 lineup will feature 120Hz ProMotion displays, including non-Pro versions.
