At MWC 2026, OPPO and MediaTek showed off new AI features on their devices at MediaTek’s “AI for Life” keynote in Barcelona. Jason Liao, the head of the OPPO Research Institute, spoke about how everyone is working together to make AI better in smartphones. The presentation showed off new AI features, development on the Omni model, and improvements in cross-ecosystem connectivity. These were all part of a unified vision for the future of AI phones.
OPPO is moving forward with its AI strategy by focusing on “New Computing, New Perception, and New Ecosystem”. It is putting a lot of emphasis on “on-device compute” to provide users AI experiences that are fast, private, and tailored to them. Jason Liao thinks that “on-device compute” is very important for making AI a real-time tool in everyday life. The company works with MediaTek to provide flagship chip platforms that make it easier for on-device AI to get from concept to widespread use. The MediaTek Dimensity 9500 platform powers OPPO’s AI Translate and AI Portrait Glow technologies, which work as well as cloud-based solutions. AI Translate is 15% more accurate than previous methods and works offline, making it reliable in various settings. AI Portrait Glow, on the other hand, increases picture quality in low-light situations by looking at different lighting situations and improving images without needing to be connected to the internet.

OPPO and MediaTek have released Omni, the first full-modal AI model that works on a smartphone and can comprehend and interact with several modes. This new technology can take voice, video, and text inputs, which lets smartphones recognise live scenes and have interactive question-and-answer sessions. Because of this, it greatly improves the ability of on-device AI to see and understand the real world, which lays the groundwork for more natural and proactive interactions between individuals as well as machines.
