PayPal to Integrate UPI for Cross-Border Payments

Your UPI ID might soon go global, thanks to PayPal's latest move.

Ever wanted to buy that slick gadget from a U.S. online store, only to pause at checkout because your Indian payment method isn’t accepted? Well, here’s some wallet-friendly news: PayPal has announced the launch of PayPal World, partnering with leading digital wallets and payment systems, including NPCI International Payments Limited’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), to simplify cross-border payments.

Starting fall 2025, PayPal World will let you shop internationally using your favourite local payment method, denominated conveniently in your local currency. Initially, this service will focus on interoperability with PayPal and Venmo, but with partners like Mercado Pago in Latin America, Tenpay Global in China, and Venmo in the US, it’s already eyeing a potential user base of around two billion people globally.

How Will It Work?

Imagine you’re shopping on a U.S. website. Instead of scrambling for an international card, you’ll simply select the UPI option right at checkout through the PayPal button. This new platform not only promises hassle-free online shopping but also smooth transactions in physical stores, future-proofing itself with upcoming AI-driven commerce capabilities.

Businesses Stand to Benefit

This innovation is more than just a consumer convenience. Businesses currently accepting PayPal payments can tap into an expansive global customer base without additional technological changes. With nearly two billion potential customers from day one, it’s a significant win-win for both consumers and businesses.

Industry Voices Excited

Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal, highlighted this move as a groundbreaking moment. “PayPal World is a first-of-its-kind payments ecosystem,” Chriss noted. “It showcases our collective commitment to building an inclusive, global digital economy.”
