NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) is testing a new disaster warning system to enhance public safety and improve emergency preparedness for disasters. An extremely severe alert has been sent in this regard, encouraging the people not to panic upon getting these mobile phone notifications. It stresses the need for disaster awareness and prevention methods, such as community training programs and the establishment of emergency response plans.
NDMA Cell Broadcast Test
The NDMA is implementing a statewide trial of its cell broadcast warning system to improve emergency alert capabilities in India. This test will send alert notifications to mobile users today, between 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. You may hear a buzzing sound or feel a sensation when an alert is received on your phone. The NDMA has said there is no need to fear if you receive these test messages.

C-DOT, the Centre for Development of Telematics, has created an Integrated Alert System called SACHET. This system is active in all 36 states and union territories of India and sends disaster alerts over SMS to specific geographical locations. The system uses the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) as specified by the International Telecommunication Union.

Cell Broadcast (CB) technology has also been used to increase the speed and effectiveness of alert delivery in addition to SMS notifications. With this technology, it may send warnings to all mobile devices in one region at the same time. It allows for an almost real-time alert.

The test alerts are transmitted in English, Hindi and numerous regional languages to handsets having cell broadcast test channels enabled. Please note that receivers need not react to these test messages. This exercise is mainly to test the operation of the system via the mobile network.
