What to expect from the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 6

Samsung has gradually perfected the form factor of its folding phones over the years. So, what new could it possibly offer on the newest Fold and Flip 6? Read along to find out.

Samsung’s second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year is set to take place on July 10. This is the event where Samsung unveils its latest line of foldables along with its smartwatch and TWS products. This year, Samsung will also launch its new smart ring at the Galaxy Unpacked II event. However, it is Samsung’s folding smartphones that dominate the headlines this time of the year – and for good reason too. Samsung has been on top of the foldable game for a long time now. With the entry of players like OnePlus and Google in this segment, Samsung will be committed to maintaining its mantle. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what you can expect from the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 6.

Samsung’s most expensive foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is rumoured to look more like the Galaxy S24 Ultra (our review here), which came out earlier this year. This means the new Fold 6 could rock sharp corners and rounded edges. Reports suggest that Samsung is also working on a dockable S Pen for its new foldable. Other than that, we don’t expect the company to make major changes to the design of the product they’ve spent so many years perfecting. Expect a book-like form factor and a hint of a crease down the middle of the screen.

Online leaks reveal that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will have a 6.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X cover display and a 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner display. If these rumours are true, it means that the cover display will be a fraction wider than the previous version. The size of the inner display will remain the same.

So far, not much is known about the camera array on the new Fold 6. This likely means that Samsung will stick with the camera specs of the previous version. The rear camera module of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 (our review here) consists of a 50MP primary shooter, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. There are two selfie cameras on the device, a 10MP sensor inside a punch-hole cutout on the cover display and a 4MP under-display camera on the inner display. While there may not be any concrete reports about a camera upgrade, we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung equips the Fold 6 with the 200MP sensor for the primary camera from the S24 Ultra.

Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 will rock the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. Samsung will stick with the three storage options that are currently on offer: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. All three variants come with 12GB of RAM. On the software front, Samsung will equip both of its foldables with Android 14/One UI 6. They will get the Galaxy AI suite which includes features like automatic transcription, generative wallpapers, live translation, and more.

Samsung is reportedly planning to introduce a new variant for the Fold series this year. This will likely be a relatively affordable version of the Fold, meant to capture the market share from the likes of the Pixel Fold and OnePlus Open. While not much is known about this variant, it could be along the lines of the ‘FE’ smartphones that Samsung releases for its flagship S Series. If this is the case, the entry-level Fold 6 will be powered by an Exynos chipset and will have slightly curtailed display and camera specs.

Expect new colour options for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 this year. The foldable is expected to be available in 5 paint schemes – Light Pink, Silver Shadow, Crafted Black, White, and Navy Blue. Some of these colour options will be exclusively available on Samsung’s online store.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

Samsung’s compact foldable will rock the same specs under the hood as the Fold 6. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC will power the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The foldable will also get the Galaxy AI suite of features.

Last year, Samsung introduced a larger, 3.4-inch Super AMOLED cover display on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 (our review here). This year, the company may increase the size of this display to 3.9 inches. The refresh rate of the cover display could also be increased from 60Hz to 120Hz. However, what we’d really like to see is an expansive functionality for this display. It would be ideal if you could browse every section of the phone on the cover display without having to unfold the device.

Some leaks suggest that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 will get a camera in the form of a 50MP primary shooter. It is about that Samsung moved on from the 12MP lens and equipped the smaller foldable with a more powerful primary camera. The ultrawide camera may also get a small boost. The 10MP selfie camera is not expected to get any upgrades.

While the changes to the form factor will be minimal on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, it will carry one important upgrade under the hood. Samsung’s compact foldable is known to struggle with battery backup, so this year, it will finally have a battery pack with a capacity of more than 4,000 mAh. The current-gen Flip 5 has a 3,700 mAh battery unit.

Conclusion

These are all the changes you can expect on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 6. While Samsung has kept a tight lid on the pricing of the two devices, expect them to cost a small premium over their previous-gen counterparts. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 range could start at Rs 1,05,000 while the Fold 6 may fetch Rs 1,60,000. Which price point do you think is justified for the two foldables? Let us know in the comments!
