Apple dropped a giant curveball at WWDC 2026. The tech giant says every iPhone that can operate iOS 26 will be able to run iOS 27. That pushes compatibility all the way back to the iPhone 11 series, which came out in 2019, and will extend the life of those handsets. It’s important to note that there is a big catch: although the main OS upgrade will be accessible, the new Apple Intelligence/Siri AI capabilities won’t necessarily be fully compatible with older devices.

Feature Limitations:
The iOS 27 update comes with a host of improvements, including security fixes, speed optimisations and user interface tweaks. Notably, it has the complete Apple Intelligence features, such as a revamped Siri and Spatial Reframing in Photos. But such functions need the A17 Pro processor or newer. Only the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and the 16 and 17 series include such processors. If you have an older model like the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13, you should check your battery health before you go forward with the upgrade.
Here are the key features that iOS 27 will introduce:
Apple has launched a major upgrade of its virtual assistant, Siri, using next-generation models powered by Gemini technology and Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, after a series of setbacks. Key improvements include Dynamic Island integration for Siri to slide down with new animations, improved contextual awareness so it can understand personal context and engage in natural conversations while analysing on-screen content for multi-app functionality, and a standalone Siri app that keeps an iCloud-synced history of interactions. Siri AI will use a beta version later this year for US English, but it will be limited to start with in the EU and China owing to local regulations and privacy issues.

Apple has tweaked the Liquid Glass UI for better readability following the design revamp in iOS 26. Main features include the opacity slider, which enables changing the transparency of the interface elements from entirely opaque to fully translucent. Furthermore, aesthetic upgrades include sidebars that fluidly extend to the window edges and app icons that have additional refraction layers, giving a more dynamic look against different backdrops.
Apple will bring new tools for parents that allow them to monitor the online activities of their children. Some of the notable features include Ask to Browse, which encourages youngsters to ask their parents’ permission before visiting new websites on Safari, with notifications sent to parents’ devices. It also has an Expanded Communication Safety function to make things safer by automatically blurring nudity in pictures for users under 18, as well as identifying and blocking violent or gory content. Plus, Smart Screen Time includes expert-approved daily recommendations for screen time use across several entertainment genres and a redesigned dashboard to easily access your digital activities.
Apple has released a handful of new features to improve the user experience. The Siri writing tools will learn the recipient’s style of communication, and if they usually structure messages as bullet points, then it will do so. Visual Intelligence will also be fully integrated into camera and screenshot features, allowing users to easily search for objects, translate words, or extract data from their screens. Most importantly, owing to the heavy demands put on servers by generative AI, some of the most complex image generation tools will have daily use restrictions, while iCloud+ subscribers will have higher daily access limits.
