Gmail for iOS begins getting the new Material Theme after Android

Google’s email service Gmail recently received a major Material Redesign. A few days back, the new design was rolled out to all Android users. Prior to that, the Material theme was made available on the Web app. The new Material theme completely changes the look of the popular email service.

And now, the search giant is rolling out a similar change in theme for its iOS app, so that its users on iPhone and iPad will be able to experience the new cleaned up service. Furthermore, users would not have to install an update manually to get Gmail’s new look. Instead, it will be a part of the server-side update.

So, even if some users are not updated to Gmail’s latest version, they will receive the Material Theme automatically. The new theme will be rolling out to all iOS users this week itself.

The Material theme rolled out to all Android smartphones and tablets last year, and will now be making its way to iOS. However, it will take a few days for the change to be visible for everyone who uses Gmail on iOS.

With the new Material theme, the red band and the colourful appearance of the app have gone. Instead, now Gmail’s app has a whiter and cleaner appearance. There is also a new font, a redesigned compose button and a different method for switching accounts with Gmail’s app. According to Gmail, the white colour will make it easier to find emails. Furthermore, a key feature to search for specific emails or attachments has also been added to the new Material theme.

As we mentioned earlier, Google has already been moving its apps and services to the Material theme and the Web-based apps were the first on to get this new design. However, we should all here that not everyone liked Gmail’s new design as come users reportedly said that the app now looks ‘too white’.

It is also worth pointing out that a number of other Google apps across Android and iOS apart from Gmail, like Keep and Maps, have seen a redesigned theme being implemented recently.
