Xiaomi UltraThin Magnetic Power Bank 5000 15W (MDY-20-EB) Review: Style over substance?

If you’re someone who prioritises aesthetics over everything else, this Xiaomi power bank is for you. Read our in-depth review.

Xiaomi’s new UltraThin magnetic power bank finds itself in an interesting spot in the brand’s accessories catalogue. It is priced at Rs 5,599, making it pricier than Xiaomi’s 20,000mAh, 165W brick. However, the UltraThin model has a superior build quality and a much sleeker profile. It can snap on to the back of your smartphone (if it supports magnetic charging) and neatly tuck inside your pocket without occupying a lot of space. We used it for a week to go through its ins and outs. Here is our review of the Xiaomi UltraThin Magnetic Power Bank 5000 15W.

The MDY-20-EB is just 6mm thick, which makes it just a smidge thicker than the iPhone Air (5.6mm) and Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge (5.8mm). It weighs 98mm, so you don’t need to worry about carrying a bulky brick with you all the time. When it’s in the pocket, you barely feel its weight while walking around.

design

The big highlight of this power bank is its aluminium chassis. The smooth matte finish lends it a very premium in-hand feel and keeps fingerprints and smudges at bay. The Mi lettering is etched at the bottom of the front panel. The curved edges align nicely with newer iPhone models. Even the 3 colour options – Radiant Orange, Glacier Silver, and Graphite Black – match the iPhone 17 series.

Flipping the power bank around reveals the fibreglass charging panel. There’s a ring in the top section to help you align your phone. While it is always recommended to use a wireless power bank without a phone cover, the MDY-20-EB can transmit charge if the case’s thickness doesn’t exceed 2.5mm. Your case has to support magnetic connection for the power bank to snap on to it. Its bottom edge houses the power button, USB-C port, and LED indicators. The power button can be double-pressed to enable low-current charging. The USB-C port works as a power input and output port.

The MDY-20-EB does not have MagSafe or Qi2 certification. Its 15W wireless charging speed is exclusive to Xiaomi 17 series smartphones. If you own an iPhone or Pixel, you will be limited to 7.5W wireless charging. The good news is that the power bank also supports USB-C charging with a steady 22.5W output. You can charge another device via the USB-C port while the power bank tops up your phone wirelessly.

performance

The spec sheet of the power bank mentions 18.95Wh, 5,000mAh typical battery energy. The rated capacity comes out to 3,000mAh. This isn’t enough to fully top up most modern smartphones with big Si/C batteries, but if you’re an iPhone Air user, you can fully charge your phone with this device. We’d even recommend it to users who own base flagship models.

If your phone’s battery capacity is around the 3,000mAh mark (not exceeding 3,500mAh), this power bank can top it up to 30% in 30 minutes. A full charge can take over 2 hours if the pack doesn’t exhaust itself. We used it on the Samsung Galaxy S26 FE, which has a 4,900mAh battery capacity, and it was able to get it to a 30% charge level in under an hour. Since we didn’t have a Xiaomi 17 series smartphone on hand, we weren’t able to test the maximum 15W charging speed. If you want a speedy charge, we recommend using a USB-C cable.

Xiaomi UltraThin Magnetic Power Bank 5000 15W (MDY-20-EB) Review: Performance

We used a 60W power adapter to charge the MDY-20-EB. It took up to 2 hours to replenish its juice. In the process, it got noticeably warm. A speedier charging experience across the board would have been much nicer.

Verdict

The Xiaomi UltraThin Magnetic Power Bank does not pretend to be a battery demon. It is designed for users who want their portable battery pack to be an extension of their premium smartphone. Its aluminium chassis, elegant curves, and matte texture offer one thing that most power bricks lack – personality. You can slap this device on your phone without worrying about bulkiness. It is airport-safe, so you can keep it in your hand luggage and pass through any security check without triggering any red flags. Sure, we wouldn’t recommend it for a weekend getaway to a place where you won’t find a power outlet, but if you need a little extra boost during your work commute – this is your guy.

Pros

  • Premium build
  • Sleek profile
  • Great for iPhones

Cons
