Google-owned video streaming platform YouTube has announced that its Premium Lite test program would be expanded to include users in India. It is a new, lower-cost YouTube Premium subscription that allows users to view most YouTube and YouTube Kids videos without ads, regardless of their location. The platform intends to broaden its low-cost options and subscriber base in the nation as it expands its “Premium Lite” membership tier pilot. However, offline downloads and background play are excluded.
YouTube has introduced its Premium Lite subscription service in India for ₹89/month, enabling ad-free watching on select content categories.
The company, in its announcement said, “Since launching YouTube Music and Premium, we’ve focused on giving subscribers a variety of ways to enjoy their favourite content, and Premium Lite is the latest step in that evolution. YouTube Music and Premium, and the expansion of Premium Lite, also continue to create additional revenue opportunities for our creators and partners.”

Premium Lite is a new subscription that provides ad-free watching of most YouTube videos on devices such as phones, computers, and televisions. Premium Lite eliminates advertisements from videos such as gaming, fashion, beauty, news, and more. Ads may still appear in music shorts, searches, or browsing. Premium subscriptions are suggested for ad-free music on YouTube and YouTube Music, as well as offline and background listening. Premium Lite does not contain YouTube Music Premium or services such as video downloads and background play.

The rollout is now going on, with full availability expected across the country in the coming weeks.
