WhatsApp to bring strict security settings to provide protection for higher-risk users: Report

This development reflects WhatsApp's commitment to improving user privacy and security.

WhatsApp is constantly improving its privacy settings to provide a safer environment for its users. Recently, the Meta-owned instant messaging company was seen testing a new feature that allows users to set up strict security settings for their accounts.

WhatsApp is working on a new security feature that will protect users from cyberattacks by restricting important messaging app features. This feature, which was found in the Android beta version, intends to improve account security for users who are vulnerable to targeted attacks. WhatsApp is also working on a feature that limits message intake from unknown accounts, which will help reduce spam and improve overall communication safety by detecting anomalous activities from unfamiliar senders. The strict account settings option, uncovered by feature tracker WABetaInfo, is designed for users who are sensitive to cyber attacks, although it is still in development and not yet accessible for testing on the most recent version of the Google Play Store.

According to WaBetaInfo, the option, which may have a new name upon official release, serves as a security check and restricts various current privacy settings to a more stringent level. Enabling this option allows users to instantly harden their defences against attacks without having to manually change several different settings. It combines critical privacy, security, and account safety features into a single, easily accessible switch, making powerful security more accessible, particularly to consumers who are unfamiliar with technology. Furthermore, once initiated, it will automatically apply the most secure options possible. The functionality also offers additional options for messages from unfamiliar or suspect accounts, addressing common user concerns about safety and privacy.

One of the primary security features added to WhatsApp is the ability to ban media and attachments from unknown senders. When enabled, this feature prevents automatic downloads of images, videos, documents, and voice notes from unknown contacts, allowing users to avoid potentially dangerous files that may include malware or malicious links. Although WhatsApp currently warns users against accessing files from unknown contacts, a new feature increases security by explicitly forbidding downloads.

This feature restricts interactions with unknown accounts to basic text messages, reducing the danger of phishing or hacking that may be hidden within media material. By automatically filtering out non-text attachments, users get more control over incoming data to their devices. Finally, this function acts as a proactive defensive mechanism, preventing potentially harmful content from surfacing in chats completely.

WhatsApp is implementing a security feature that disables link previews in chats to prevent third-party websites from inferring users’ IP addresses. This modification stops possible attackers from getting information about a user’s device or location while sharing a link. Although users may already enable this function under privacy settings, it will be integrated into the strict security account settings to provide further protection, particularly for higher-risk accounts. This change aims to reduce indirect data breaches and provide individuals with more control over their online information exposure.

WhatsApp’s silence unknown callers function automatically mutes calls from numbers that are not stored in a user’s contacts, limiting disruptions and exposure to spam or fraud. Users may still look at these calls via the Calls tab. This method is particularly important in preventing 0-click attacks, which occur when malicious calls exploit vulnerabilities without requiring user engagement. While WhatsApp is improving its systems to protect against such attacks, this functionality provides an important layer of user control by silencing unidentified callers, eliminating a direct communication path for prospective attackers. Currently available in the app’s privacy settings, WhatsApp intends to incorporate it with stronger security account settings to automatically give increased protection for high-risk users.

Another security feature restricts who may invite a user to group chats, allowing only stored contacts to send invites. This avoids undesired ads to spam or phishing groups and gives users more control over their communication. WhatsApp reduces exposure to malicious content by blocking group invites from unfamiliar accounts, which benefits users who are the subject of spam or harassment. This option, which is available in privacy settings, will be implemented under strict security settings to safeguard users.

Security notifications alert users to any changes to a contact’s security code in end-to-end encrypted chats, ensuring the privacy of messages. A change may indicate that the contact has reinstalled WhatsApp or switched devices. This function is included in strict security account settings, which assist high-risk users by requiring them to verify contacts or pause sensitive discussions if necessary.  When a code change happens, users can call a contact to authenticate their identification, which improves the security and authenticity of private chats.

WhatsApp’s two-step verification demands a PIN when users re-register their number, limiting unauthorised access even if a SIM card or device is compromised. This security feature is essential for preventing account hijacking and identity theft while allowing users to retain control over their personal information. It is especially useful for people at risk of phishing attempts since it makes it impossible for attackers to access or mimic accounts. WhatsApp has included this functionality within its tight security settings, providing automatic protection for higher-risk users.
