Recent supply chain leaks and rumours suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will get some major internal changes, along with some camera upgrades. These updates are expected to make this generation one of the biggest upgrades in years, indicating a drastic change in features and performance from prior versions.

iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max release timeline

Apple will probably change its traditional timeline for the iPhone 18 series launch. The premium versions include the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the much-anticipated iPhone Fold and are expected to be released in September 2026. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, the more conventional and cheap variants, meanwhile, are likely to be unveiled in spring 2027. This delayed release schedule shows Apple wants to put the spotlight on its top model before introducing a less expensive option.

Expected pricing

Despite the high production cost of a 2nm node processor, early analyst reports indicate that Apple is planning to stick with its pricing strategy versus the global market. The company is said to be aiming for a debut price of around $1,099 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,199 for the Pro Max. This suggests that Apple is committed to keeping its products competitively priced even while it invests in cutting-edge processor technology.

Design upgrades (Expected)

Pantone leak codes suggest that additional colour options are being tested, such as a refined Dark Cherry finish (a deep red with purple undertones) in addition to classic colours like Light Blue, Silver and Dark Grey.

Apple is also working on aesthetic concerns with the rear glass, shifting to a more uniform colour that closely matches the anodised aluminium frames.

The upcoming Apple iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will include some major improvements in their appearance but will retain the same old screen sizes of 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively. One major change is the smaller Dynamic Island, which is said to have been revamped to include an integrated Face ID housing that’s around 35 per cent slimmer, allowing for more usable screen real estate. The gadgets will also use LTPO+ display technology to further reduce battery usage.

Specifications and Features (Expected)

TSMC’s 2-nanometre A20 Pro processor is on the horizon, with performance advancements likely to arrive in Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro series. The device is expected to provide a 15% boost in processing performance while using as much as 30% less power than the current 3nm processors. Additionally, a new chip package design places the system memory near the CPU to enhance operating efficiency. This change is reportedly a big upgrade for on-device Apple Intelligence tasks.

Apple is also expected to start moving away from Qualcomm hardware by 2026 when the company plans to launch its own C2 modem, which is expected to support 5G technology (including mmWave) and improve satellite communication capabilities, which could allow third-party applications such as WhatsApp to work without having to connect directly to cellular networks.

The camera module is expected to get major hardware upgrades, the most prominent of which is the addition of a variable aperture system to the 48-megapixel primary camera. This feature will provide users with the option of manual or automated light adjustments, greatly increasing the control over depth-of-field effects and boosting low-light shooting capabilities.

There are also claims of all three rear lenses – Main, Ultra-Wide and Telephoto – being upgraded to 48-megapixel sensors. The telephoto lens is interesting, especially since it is said to have a bigger aperture. The enhancement is said to provide for cleaner photos when using 4x or 8x zoom levels in low-light circumstances, which is a big overall photographic performance boost.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to come with a battery capacity between 5,100mAh and 5,200mAh, which will be the largest battery ever included in an iPhone model. That bump in battery size will come at the cost of a larger chassis, expected to be roughly 8.8mm. Also, Apple is looking at several battery solutions depending on the market where the product will be sold, and the batteries that use a physical SIM card would be different to the batteries that just use eSIM. The battery life improvements are likely to come down to a new 2nm design as well as some hardware changes.
