Earlier this week, Meta launched its first media generation mode, Muse Image. Users can access this AI image generator on Meta AI, Instagram, and WhatsApp. One of the concerning things about this AI model is that it can be summoned by Instagram users to create images based on the pictures you’ve uploaded to your profile. To make things worse, every user is opted into this feature by default. Don’t want anything to do with it? Here’s how you can stop Instagram from using your pictures for AI use.

Why Meta’s Muse Image has caused an uproar among Instagram users

Instagram users have flagged Meta’s Muse Image as an invasive and privacy-violating AI tool, and they’re not wrong. The image-generation model has access to all the posts on public Instagram profiles. People can tag your account in a prompt to get the tool to generate AI images of you. Instagram neither notifies you when this happens nor does it let you take down the image (unless you generated it). Since it is an opt-out feature, it is turned on for every user on the platform by default.

While Meta says that Muse Image has safety guardrails built into it, scraping content from public profiles without the explicit consent of users is a gross violation of privacy in itself. You can cut off its access to your posts by making your profile private. If you’d like your profile to remain public, you can opt out of the feature from the ‘Sharing and reuse’ settings.
