If you have ever dropped a phone face-first onto a pavement, today’s puzzle will feel uncomfortably familiar. NYT Strands hints October 1 all point to one theme, “Things fall apart”, and the grid is built around the many ways an object can stop being an object. Puzzle #942 is a gentle one if you have ever broken something, and a mildly traumatic one if you have broken something expensive.
Spoilers are below, but I have arranged them in stages. Read only as far as you need to and then go back to the grid.

How Strands works (a quick refresher)
Strands is the New York Times’ word-search twist that lets you link neighbouring letters in any direction. The path can bend as it goes, so words wriggle across the board in odd shapes. Every letter belongs to an answer, and every answer ties back to the day’s theme. One special answer, the spangram, describes the theme itself and runs from one side of the grid to the opposite side.
There is also a built-in safety net. Find three valid words that are not part of the theme and the game unlocks a hint, which highlights the letters of one answer. It is a handy trick when you are stuck, though it does cost you some pride.

Today’s NYT Strands theme hint
The theme is “Things fall apart”, and it covers words about breaking things. The in-game clue hints at descriptions of something shattering into pieces. Think about what happens to a biscuit in tea, a sandcastle at high tide or a screen protector that was not quite protective enough. Every answer describes what happens next, and you will be doing a lot of mental demolition.
Is today’s spangram horizontal or vertical?
It is horizontal, so start hunting from the left edge and sweep across to the right. That narrows the search more than you might expect, because anything stretching vertically can be ruled out. If you are still stuck, our daily puzzle hints and solutions are one tap away.
Today’s NYT Strands spangram
Scroll no further if you want to keep some mystery alive.
Today’s spangram is BEYOND REPAIR. It is a fitting summary of the theme, because it describes the state of everything else in the grid. Once it is locked in, the remaining letters tend to fall into place quickly.
NYT Strands answers for October 1, 2026
If the spangram did not rescue your streak, here is the full NYT Strands word list for puzzle #942, in no particular order.
- Crumble
- Break
- Collapse
- Fragment
- Dissolve
A few tips for finding them. Short words such as BREAK are often tucked into corners, so check the edges before you chase the long ones. Longer answers like COLLAPSE and DISSOLVE usually bend around the board, so do not assume they run in a straight line. Once BEYOND REPAIR is placed, the leftover letters tell you where the rest of the words have to be.

How to solve NYT Strands faster
Here is the routine that works for me on most days. It also applies to the rest of the NYT puzzle family.
- Read the theme clue twice, then guess the category before touching a single letter.
- Look for the spangram’s rough path first. It sets the boundaries for everything else.
- Hunt for three or four-letter words in the corners, where letters have fewer neighbours.
- Use the hint system when you are properly stuck rather than after the first wrong guess.
