What Is Today’s Strands Theme?
Today’s theme is Changing course. If that feels vague, here’s the extra clue. Think “not this, but that.” Every theme word is some flavour of reversing, abandoning or doing a full U-turn on a previous decision. Politicians will find this one relatable.
A Quick Refresher on How Strands Works
Strands, from the New York Times Games stable, is a word-search puzzle without the word list. You get a grid of letters, a theme and a lot of confidence that will slowly drain away. You drag across neighbouring letters to build words that fit the theme. One of them, the spangram, stretches from one edge of the board to the opposite edge.

Here’s the trick that rescues many a stuck solver. Any word of four or more letters that you find counts toward a hint. Find three, and the game highlights one real theme answer for you. You still have to unscramble the letters, but at least you know where to look.

- ROTE
- TREE
- TREES
Find any three of these, or any other valid words of four letters or more, and the game will light up one theme word for you.
Today’s Strands Answers (Spoilers Ahead)
Last chance to look away. Still here? Fine.
Theme words
- FLIP
- UNDO
- REVERSE
- OVERTURN
- BACKPEDAL
Spangram
The spangram is THEOLDSWITCHEROO, and it’s a lovely one. It fits the theme perfectly, since the old switcheroo is basically the whole point of changing course. To find it, start at the T that sits three letters in from the left on the bottom row. Then wind upward and finally back down across the board.
Why Today’s Puzzle Feels Tougher Than Usual
The theme words are short and common, which is exactly what makes them tricky. FLIP and UNDO could hide in half a dozen places on the grid, so the board never tells you which route is right. BACKPEDAL and OVERTURN, on the other hand, are long enough to snake around corners, so you often spot a fragment and lose the thread.
The spangram is the real culprit. A fifteen-letter phrase that crosses the whole board is difficult to see until the other words are cleared away. Solving the theme words first and letting the spangram appear in the leftover letters is usually the smartest play.

Quick Tips for Next Time
- Read the theme out loud. It often reveals the word family.
- Hunt for common endings such as -ED, -ER and -ING on the board edges.
- Solve the short words first, since they free up letters for the long ones.
- Don’t be proud. Use the hint system.
