NYT Strands Hints Today, October 25, 2026 (Puzzle #966) – Spangram and All Answers

Progressive hints first, spoilers later, so you can take only as much help as your Sunday coffee demands.

Sunday puzzles should be relaxing, yet here you are, staring at a grid of letters and questioning your life choices. Relax. These NYT Strands hints today for October 25 will get you through puzzle #966 without bruising your streak or your ego. The theme is “Something to build on”, and if that sounds like a motivational poster in a dentist’s waiting room, don’t worry. It is far friendlier than it sounds.

Today’s Strands theme and the gentle nudges

The clue is “Something to build on”, which is the New York Times telling you to put on a hard hat. Think construction, think architecture, think the bits of a building you never notice until they fail.

Here is the spoiler-free help.

  • The spangram points to the stable things that buildings and homes are built upon. Hopefully they are stable, anyway.
  • The theme words all do the same job. They support and prop up everything around them and on top of them.

If that is enough to get you going, stop reading here and go win. The rest of this article contains the answers.

Spoiler warning, the full Strands #966 spangram and answers

Last chance to look away.

The spangram today is FOUNDATIONS. It stretches across the board and, as it happens, forms a sturdy mountain-like shape at the bottom of the grid, which is a rather poetic touch for a word about stability.

The four theme words are as follows.

  • SKELETON
  • SCAFFOLDING
  • FRAMEWORK
  • STRUCTURE

Find all of them plus the spangram and the board is cleared. Simple as that, though “simple” is doing some heavy lifting before your first coffee.

How the puzzle comes together

The smartest way into this Strands puzzle is to hunt for the spangram first. Once FOUNDATIONS lights up in yellow, the theme clicks into place and you stop guessing at random. After that, the construction vocabulary practically volunteers itself.

There are a couple of traps worth knowing about. STRUT looks tempting, but it is not a theme word, because the actual answer is STRUCTURE. The same goes for SCAFFOLD, which falls short of the full SCAFFOLDING. SKELETON sits in the upper left of the grid, so if you are scanning corners, start there. Strands loves to dangle a shorter, plausible word in front of you while the longer answer hides in plain sight. Always check whether the word you found wants to be longer.

A quick refresher on how Strands works

New to the game? Strands is a free daily word puzzle from The New York Times, available on its website and in the NYT Games app. You get a grid of letters and a theme clue, and your job is to find the hidden words that fit that theme. Words can twist in any direction, including diagonals, but each letter is used only once, and every letter on the board belongs to an answer.

The most important find is the spangram, which spans the board either left to right or top to bottom and describes the theme itself. It glows yellow when you find it, while regular theme words glow blue.

How the hint system works

Stuck even after all this? Strands has a built-in safety net. Submit any three valid words of four letters or more that are not theme words, and the Hint button becomes clickable. Press it and the letters of one theme word light up, though you still have to connect them in the right order. There is no time limit and no cap on guesses, so you cannot actually fail. You can only take a scenic route.

Our archive is full of past solutions if you missed a day, and you can browse the full set on the GadgetBridge Strands hints page. Fans of other daily brain-teasers will find plenty more in our puzzles section and across our NYT coverage.
