AV2 Is Coming to YouTube, Chrome, Netflix and Prime Video, and Your Data Plan Will Be Grateful

The successor to AV1 promises roughly 30 percent better compression, and Google is the first to put a timeline on it.

Key Takeaways

  • Google has confirmed a 2027 timeline for AV2 codec support on YouTube, with web streaming potentially beginning as early as next year.
  • AV2 offers approximately 30 percent better compression at the same visual quality compared to its predecessor, AV1.
  • The codec supports new features such as multi-video experiences, real-time communications, immersive media, and improved HDR performance.

Streaming video has a weight problem, and the industry’s favourite diet plan just got a date. The AV2 codec YouTube support 2027 timeline is now official, with Google confirming that YouTube on the web could begin serving AV2 videos as early as the start of next year. Google has also shown AV2 playback working in Chrome, which is the sort of groundwork that turns a press-release promise into something real.

The announcement came from the main members of the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), the group behind the royalty-free codecs that quietly run much of the modern internet. Google, Amazon, Meta and Netflix all spoke up about bringing AV2 into their products. Only Google, however, named a window.

What AV2 actually is

Think of a codec as the packing method for video. A better packing method means the same footage fits into a smaller suitcase. AV2 is the successor to AV1, and its pitch is around 30 percent better compression at the same visual quality. Some early benchmarks have pushed that figure higher on specific kinds of footage, though results will vary with content and encoder maturity.

AOMedia finalised the specification in late May 2026, roughly six months behind its original target, and made the official announcement on June 9. Since then the work has shifted from writing the rulebook to building everything that has to obey it.

Why YouTube going first makes sense

YouTube is already the poster child for AV1. By Google’s own numbers, more than 90 percent of its catalogue, weighted by watch time, was available in AV1 as of March 2026. That means the platform has already done the heavy lifting of encoding at scale, so AV2 is less a leap into the unknown and more a software upgrade on a very large machine.

For viewers, the payoff is simple. Either you get sharper video at the same bandwidth, or the same quality while using less data. In markets like India, where mobile data still matters and network quality swings wildly between cities and towns, that is not a small perk. It is the difference between a smooth 1080p stream and a buffering wheel of regret.

Beyond smaller files

AV2 is not only about trimming bitrates. The codec also adds support for multi-video experiences, which could mean watching several feeds at once. Think multi-angle sports or a split-screen set of live streams. It also targets real-time communications, immersive media, higher frame rates and improved HDR performance. So the benefits may reach video calls and extended reality long before most people notice a change in their regular streaming.

Netflix and Prime Video are watching, not committing

Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are both exploring AV2, but neither has offered a rollout date. That is not surprising. Netflix has used AV1 only on certain devices and titles, and large streamers tend to move carefully when millions of living-room devices are involved.

The hardware problem nobody can wave away

Here is the catch. A codec is only as useful as the chips that can decode it. AOMedia says its members are still working on encoders, decoders, compliance testing, benchmarking, interoperability, content creation tools and hardware readiness. Software decoding on a powerful laptop is one thing. A budget smart TV or a three-year-old phone is another story.

Industry watchers expect mass-market support to arrive when new silicon from the big chipmakers starts shipping, which points to 2027 and 2028 for most households. AOMedia has also said that 53 percent of surveyed members plan to adopt AV2 within a year of launch, and 88 percent within two years.

There is one more wrinkle. A patent-licensing firm outside the alliance, Sisvel, has indicated plans for an AV2 patent pool, much as it did for AV1. The codec stays royalty-free among AOMedia members, but device makers outside the group could face questions later.

Will AV2 repeat AV1’s success or VVC’s shrug?

AV1 took years to go from announcement to ubiquity. VVC, also known as H.266, has seen very limited uptake despite being around for a while. AV2 has a clear advantage in its backers, since the companies writing the standard also run the platforms that can deploy it. Still, history says adoption is a marathon, and nobody should expect a 2027 flip of a switch.

What this means for you

If you watch YouTube in Chrome, you may be among the first to see AV2 streams. If you stream on a TV or phone, expect to wait for newer hardware. Either way, no action is needed today. Your current devices will keep working, and platforms will almost certainly keep serving older formats for years.
