How can you make your old desktop PC connect to Wi-Fi?

Connecting your desktop PC to a Wi-Fi network is as simple as that in laptop. Here is the complete guide.

Old desktops didn’t have internal hardware to connect to Wi-Fi. But, today there are several apparatuses available in the market through which you can connect your desktop computer to a Wi-Fi connection just like you do with a laptop or smartphone.

How to use a wireless network adapter to connect to a Wi-Fi network?

You can easily buy a decent wireless network adapter under Rs. 500 such as one from TP-LINK. Each dongle has different specs and compatibility. You might need to go through the documentation provided with your device. However, the basics remain the same. To connect your desktop to a Wi-Fi network using a wireless network adapter, follow these steps.

1) Use the driver CD to install the software on your PC.

2) Insert the USB dongle into the USB port

3) Let the software scan for all available access points. Make sure you position our PC such that the Wi-Fi signals don’t get blocked.

4) Once you find the Wi-Fi name on the list, press the click on the ‘Connect’ button.

5) You may need to enter the security key or WPA Wireless key. Check the router manual or ask the operator to get the key.

6) Once you enter the key, the connection of your desktop with the network will be established.

What if the connection does not get established?

Sometimes, old anti-virus and drivers obstruct the connection from getting established. You can troubleshoot the network or update the anti-virus software of your desktop PC. If your hardware setup is fine, this trick works in most cases.
