Microblogging platform X formerly known as Twitter is in the news again. The company head Elon Musk has announced that specific accounts will now be able to access free premium services. As mentioned “specific users”, not every user will be qualified to avail of X Premium services for free. The decision was made in response to reports that the daily user base of X is declining and is now trailing behind Instagram and TikTok, its competitors in the industry.
Elon Musk has revealed that certain users on the microblogging network X (formerly known as Twitter) would now have access to features from X Premium and X Premium+, the paid subscription, for free. His X post said, “Going forward, all 𝕏 accounts with over 2,500 verified subscriber followers will get Premium features for free and accounts with over 5,000 will get Premium+ for free.”
According to Musk users with 2,500 verified subscriber followers will receive a complimentary subscription to Premium features. Furthermore, Musk announced that a Premium+ subscription will be given away for free to individuals who have over 5,000 verified subscriber followers. Right now the X Premium+ subscription costs Rs 1,300 per month if signed up using the web or Rs 13,600 annually. Note that Premium subscribers receive less advertising from X, whereas Premium+ subscribers see none at all and also have access to the generative artificial intelligence chatbot Grok.
While other people asked for clarification, his supporters applauded the announcement. But the move follows a report that said after about a year and a half, Musk’s X appeared to have lost over a quarter of its user base. Data acquired by mobile analytics company Sensor Tower indicates that the number of daily active mobile app users in the United States for X has decreased by 23% since November 2022.
As per the report, the year-over-year data has revealed that the number of mobile app users in the United States has decreased by 18% from a year ago. In the United States, X’s mobile app had 27 million daily active users as of last month. Having trouble retaining its users, however, X has denied all of this.
