WhatsApp’s Android app now supports chat-specific theming, a feature that was previously restricted to allowing users to choose their chat’s background image. Similar to Facebook’s Messenger app, the new design adds customisation by letting users pick a theme for a particular session. It took a while for WhatsApp to add chat themes, however, it does now support Android devices.
WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is updating to version 2.24.21.34 and introducing a feature that allows users to select a chat theme from 20 different colours through the Google Play Beta Program.
It looks like WhatsApp now plans to provide Android users the same option to modify the chat theme as it offers for iOS users. Rather than having to stick to a single theme for the whole app, users may now customise their experience even further by choosing multiple themes for separate chats.

Some beta testers may play around with the WhatsApp chat theme feature according to the posted screenshot. Right within the app settings, users may choose a default chat theme that will be applied to all chats, guaranteeing a unified and consistent appearance across the entire app. To provide variation, WhatsApp also lets users change the theme of individual chats by hitting the overflow menu while in a conversation. To tailor their chats to their own tastes, users may select a theme here. It is noteworthy that users have access to a large selection of themes, which enables them to designate distinct themes for specific chats.
For personal chats, users may choose one theme, for work-related chats, another, and for group chats, a whole other one. Users have several possibilities to personalise their chats, which makes it simpler to visually distinguish between different sorts of chats depending on their context. There are over 22 unique themes and 20 colour variations available.
To maintain a visually consistent conversation format, the chat system automatically assigns a message colour to each theme. In addition, users may customise their conversations by selecting a new backdrop while maintaining the message colour they’ve chosen. This adaptability enables different looks for each interaction, even while utilising the same theme, reflecting individual tastes and guaranteeing a uniform appearance.

According to the report the feature of theme customization is private, allowing users to select a specific chat theme only for their device, without affecting the recipient’s appearance. This maintains user privacy, promotes individual expression without imposing it on others, and guarantees a personalised chat experience for every user.
Note that this function is presently restricted to a small group of users in order to collect feedback and make sure there are no major problems with it.
