Apple teams up with Pixar, Adobe and others to form OpenUSD

By expanding the capabilities of Open Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD), the coalition aims to standardise the 3D ecosystem.

Apple today announced that the Joint Development Foundation (JDF) an affiliate of the Linux Foundation together with Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, and NVIDIA announced the formation of the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD). According to the company, this alliance will promote the standardization, development, evolution, and growth of Pixar’s Universal Scene Description technology.

By expanding the capabilities of Open Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD), the coalition aims to standardise the 3D ecosystem. The Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, and NVIDIA partnership will make it possible for developers and content producers to describe, compose, and simulate large-scale 3D projects as well as create a constantly expanding range of 3D-enabled goods and services by encouraging better interoperability of 3D tools and data.

Created by Pixar Animation Studios, OpenUSD is a high-performance 3D scene description technology that offers robust interoperability across tools, data, and workflows. The strength and adaptability of OpenUSD make it the perfect content platform to meet the demands of new markets and applications.

OpenUSD is known for its capacity to collectively capture artistic expression and streamline cinematic content production.

The alliance is said to develop written specifications detailing the features of OpenUSD. As a result, there will be increased compatibility, wider adoption, integration, and implementation, and other standards organisations will be able to include in their specifications. The Linux Foundation’s JDF was chosen to house the project, as it will enable open, efficient, and effective development of OpenUSD specifications while providing a path to recognition through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Additionally, AOUSD will serve as the main forum for the industry’s collective definition of technological advancements. In addition to this, collaboration expands an open invitation to a wide range of companies and organizations to join and take part in determining the direction of OpenUSD.
