Facebook Waves Goodbye to Videos, Says Hello to Reels

Meta merges video uploads into Reels, promising seamless sharing experiences.

If you’ve ever hesitated between posting a video or crafting a reel, Facebook has good news: soon, you won’t have to choose. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has announced it’s rolling out an update that will unify videos and reels into a single, streamlined sharing experience. This means all videos on Facebook will soon become reels, complete with zero restrictions on length or format. Say hello to simplified social sharing and goodbye to decision paralysis.

Streamlined Experience: What to Expect

Currently, Facebook users face a small but noticeable hurdle—selecting whether their video upload should appear as a standard video in their Feed or as a short-form reel. This duality is ending. Meta has clarified that moving forward, every uploaded video will automatically transform into a reel, creating a uniform experience across the platform.

Moreover, the dedicated “Video” tab will soon be revamped and renamed to “Reels.” But worry not, Facebook assures that these UI changes won’t mess with your video recommendations. You’ll still see relevant reels tailored to your interests, regardless of length.

New Tools, Same Familiarity

One of the appealing aspects of this change is the enriched set of editing tools users will gain access to. Video creators—whether casual sharers or professional influencers—can enhance their reels with intuitive editing capabilities, a diverse music library, and an expanded selection of effects. It’s creativity, unlocked.

Audience settings remain untouched, giving you full control over who gets to see your content—friends-only, or publicly available to the world.

Meta video reels update

When is it happening?

This rollout won’t happen overnight. Meta has stated that the transition to Reels will occur gradually over the coming months for Facebook profiles and Pages globally. The gradual pace is likely intended to ensure users have ample time to adapt to the new system without facing immediate disruption.

Meta’s vision for this update underscores the growing dominance of short-form video content across social platforms. By merging videos into reels, Facebook joins competitors in simplifying user-generated content sharing, effectively recognising reels as the definitive format for video storytelling.

Expert Opinion: A Smart Move?

In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, simplicity often wins. While die-hard video traditionalists might initially grumble, unifying videos and reels is undoubtedly a savvy move. Streamlined experiences keep users engaged and creators focused on content, rather than formats. In the game of digital attention, ease of use is the ultimate trump card.
