Google is looking into utilising artificial intelligence capabilities to write news articles. Reportedly the tech giant has recently demonstrated the AI technology to new organisations like The New York Times, and The Washington Post owned by The Wall Street Journal to support journalists generate news pieces using the AI tool while saving time.

According to a report, Google’s new AI tool for generating new articles is internally known as “Genesis”. The tools are capable of gathering data and producing news content.

“The tool, known internally by the working title Genesis, can take in information — details of current events, for example — and generate news content, the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the product,” the stated NY Times.

Google believes that this tech tool will responsibly help steer the publishing industry away from the pitfalls of generative AI. The company also thought it could act as a sort of personal assistant for journalists, automating some tasks to free up time for others.

Google has spoken with a number of publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post and News Corp, which owns The Wall Street Journal. As per the report by NY Times, a few company executives who looked at Google’s offer described it as alarming, asking not to be identified discussing a confidential matter. While two people said it seemed to take for granted the effort that went into producing accurate and artful news stories.

Google’s spokeswoman Jenn Crider stated, “in partnership with news publishers, especially smaller publishers, we’re in the earliest stages of exploring ideas to potentially provide A.I.-enabled tools to help their journalists with their work.”

She further added, “Quite simply, these tools are not intended to, and cannot, replace the essential role journalists have in reporting, creating and fact-checking their articles.” On the contrary, they might offer alternatives for headlines and other writing ese.

While some organisations are already using AI to generate news stories, Google’s new AI tool for creating new articles will probably raise concerns because articles produced by AI that haven’t been meticulously fact-checked or corrected have the potential for spreading false information. Also, it will be difficult for readers to distinguish between content created by humans and AI tech.
