Google has good news for Chromebook users. The tech giant has officially confirmed that it will be extending the duration of upcoming updates to improve security and would henceforth receive routine, automatic upgrades every four weeks. Previously it was providing software updates for up to 8 years but it has now the number of years has been extended to 10. Not just that new ChromeOS updates for Chromebooks will hasten the repair procedure.
Google via its blog post has announced that it will offer improved security features and 10 Years of automatic updates for Chromebooks, but there’s a catch Google has announced that all Chromebooks released in 2021 or after will now receive 10 Years of automatic updates beginning in 2024.
“Today, we’re announcing new ways to keep your Chromebooks up and running even longer. All Chromebook platforms will get regular automatic updates for 10 years — more than any other operating system commits to today.”
Every four weeks, Chromebooks automatically receive updates that increase security and lengthen the lifespan of your laptop. And starting in 2024, Google will prolong these automatic upgrades for another ten years, ensuring that your Chromebook has improved security, reliability, and functionality.
Additionally, Google disclosed that it is collaborating with partners to create Chromebooks with more post-consumer recycled materials (PCR), as well as introducing new, power-saving features and quicker repair procedures. It will also help schools, businesses, and regular people locate the best recycling alternative after their useful lives are through.
Users and IT administrators will have the choice to prolong automatic updates to 10 years from the platform’s release for Chromebooks released before 2021 that are already in use (after they receive their last automated update).
A Chromebook still comes with strong, built-in security measures even if automatic updates are no longer provided. Your Chromebook performs a self-check each time it starts up with Verified Boot, for instance. It will typically repair itself, returning to its initial state, if it notices that the system has been altered or corrupted in any manner.
Google will shortly roll out new repair processes that will enable licenced repair facilities, particularly in the US, to fix Chromebooks without an actual USB key. Therefore, this will save the time needed for software repairs by almost 50%.
In the upcoming months, Google will introduce new, energy-efficient capabilities to the vast majority of compatible platforms in an effort to make Chromebooks more environmentally friendly. Battery saver will minimise or stop energy-intensive processes, while adaptive charging will assist in maintaining the health of the battery.
