WhatsApp Message Translation Feature Coming Soon, Spotted on WhatsApp beta for Android

A new toggle shows up under the Chat lock option on a per-chat basis.

WhatsApp plans to launch a new function dubbed “message translation,” which is believed to be a substantial enhancement for users. The function, which is part of the company’s AI technologies, allows users to generate photos, vacation plans, and even food recipes. This function is likely to be especially beneficial for individuals who travel regularly and get messages in other languages, as it eliminates the need for a separate translation tool.

WhatsApp is developing a new message translation function on its Android beta version, which will allow for smooth, automated on-device translation of messages. The functionality employs end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to process communications on the user’s device rather than the company’s servers. To utilise the translation tool, users must first pick and download language packs. According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has been working on the feature since July 2024, and it is now accessible in WhatsApp chats and channels. After upgrading to WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.12.25, certain beta testers may now use the new ‘Translate Messages’ function.

As per the shared screenshot, beta testers may now download language packs and translate messages right within the app. Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese (Brazil), Hindi, and Russian are among the languages supported. WhatsApp will download the necessary language pack for translation. Users may also install a language pack that recognises the language of incoming messages, which is very handy in group conversations.

According to the report, the translation option is available via the chat info screen, where users may pick the language from which messages should be translated per-chat, allowing for customisation based on user demands. Alternatively, users can manually translate individual messages by selecting “Translate”. All translations are performed locally on the device, and no message data is exchanged with Meta or other servers. The in-house technology powers WhatsApp’s voice message transcription service for Android, guaranteeing smooth translation on-device while maintaining end-to-end encryption.

Users have complete control over this function, since they may alter or cancel their translation settings at any moment from the chat details panel, where they first activated it. The capability is not restricted to private chats; it also applies to groups and channels, allowing users to interpret text in many languages.

Some beta testers have access to this functionality, which will be rolled out to additional people in the coming weeks.
