WhatsApp testing block messages from unknown accounts feature

The latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.20.16 update, accessible on the Google Play Store, confirms the release of a security feature that blocks messages from unknown accounts.

WhatsApp has added a new spam prevention function to safeguard users from receiving unwanted messages from unwanted accounts. This feature stops messages from being sent by unknown senders by filtering them out under certain conditions. Some beta testers have previously had access to this capability, which has to be manually activated.

Wabetainfo reports that WhatsApp is updating the Google Play Beta Program to version 2.24.20.16 and is giving certain beta testers access to a new security feature that allows them to block messages from unknown accounts.

Users will be able to reject incoming messages if they reach a predetermined volume thanks to a function that WhatsApp is testing that lets users block messages from unknown accounts. Public testing of the functionality is now underway, and some beta testers are experimenting with message filtering from accounts they do not know.

According to the shared screenshot, beta testers have access to a new security option in the app settings that allows them to filter out large amounts of unknown messaging. By accessing the Advanced section of their privacy settings, users can enable this. With the addition of the block unknown account messages feature, unwanted interactions may now be better prevented by automatically blocking messages from unknown accounts if their volume exceeds a certain threshold.

Reports indicate that when used, this function cannot completely avoid unknown messages. It aims to stop accounts from sending a lot of messages in a short period of time, preserving device performance from spam overload and ensuring users get essential messages from random contacts. The block is lifted when the volume of messages sent and received by unknown accounts is normalised, as determined by the algorithm. For security against any spam or phishing efforts, WhatsApp advises turning this function on if a user starts to get a lot of messages from accounts they are not familiar with. Not all unknown contacts are blocked permanently by this function.
